Basilica of St. Servatius

The historic town of Maastricht offers a few musts like the Basilica of St. Servatius, the largest Romanesque church in the Netherlands. The church sits on the Vrijthof square in Maastricht's Old City's center. Constructed on the burial place of Saint Servatius who died in Maastricht in the 4th century AD, the Roman Catholic basilica was a pilgrimage site for those coming to pay respect to the crypt and its relics.

TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair)

Each March, over 250 leading art and antiques dealers from nearly 20 countries typically present their finest work, which covers about 7,000 years of art history. The fair takes place at the Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre (MECC), a nondescript space that is totally transformed by thousands of tulips, carnations and anemones, as well as huge branches of magnolia. The beauty of TEFAF is its refinement, including elegantly decorated rooms or stands (you simply can’t call them “booths”), an illustrated doorstop-size catalog, and an easy-to-negotiate layout divided into nine sections, ranging from Old Master to blue-chip Modern and Contemporary art and design. Close to 170 international experts vet every object on view for quality, authenticity and provenance. Coming to TEFAF is regularly likened to visiting a museum where almost everything is for sale. And unlike at other art fairs, here visitors are a lot more interested in the art than in the art of people watching.

Underground Tunnels

Built between 1575 and 1825, Maastricht’s nearly 9 miles of underground tunnels played a crucial role in the city’s history. Originally constructed to store arms and to serve as a bunker for troops during times of invasion, the subterranean network, which runs along the city’s walls, was used as a shelter for locals during World War II and Cold War. During the course of WWII, nearly 800 artworks were stored here, including Rembrandt’s iconic Night Watch. Indagare members can contact our Bookings Team to arrange a guided tour.
