From the moment you turn into the quiet courtyard of this uniquely Parisian boutique hotel, you feel like you have been let in on a secret. The bustle of Saint-Germain-des-Près turns into a hush as you arrive at the foot of the handsome, honey-colored hôtel particulier, located on one of the 6th arrondissement’s most charming side streets. Interiors have been brilliantly updated but maintain a strong sense of place thanks to an abundance of French designers (if you fall in love with the fantastical patterned wallpapers, you can always visit Pierre Frey up the road). None of the 48 guest rooms have the same layout, but all express a color palette with touches of gold, gray and rose. Relais Christine feels intimate with an engaged staff that seems to immediately know you by name. And even though you can reach most everything on the Left Bank on foot, there are complimentary bikes as well as an adorable (rentable) Fiat 500 for trips further afield. Don’t miss dinner at the adjacent Le Christine, one of the city’s loveliest bistros, and the cavernous yet whimsical Guerlain spa located below the hotel, housed within unique 13th-century vaults. For those seeking a chic, unfussy place to lay their head after long days exploring Paris, Hôtel Bel Ami offers a prime location in the literary heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Set in the former printing house that produced Guy de Maupassant’s 19th-century novel Bel-Ami, the property weaves its history into a present-day look that’s streamlined and modern (think: natural oak bedside tables, a muted, earthy palette and graphic details). The overall mood is minimalist without feeling stark, and the hotel runs on simplicity and efficiency rather than bells and whistles. Downstairs, the on-site restaurant opens onto the lively rue Saint-Benoît, making it easy to step outside and chart your own course through the neighborhood. I recently visited this newcomer in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and was delighted by the prime Left Bank address and, more so, the genuinely intimate, residential atmosphere. Set in an elegant 18th-century townhouse on Rue de Seine, the nine-room hideaway (with six deluxe rooms and three suites) delivers a calm, almost cocoon-like feel within an otherwise bustling neighborhood. The décor highlights warm ochre and earth tones, plush textiles and the owner’s collection of Normandy flea-market finds. Some rooms have tiny balconies over the Rue de Seine or terraces with views of Saint-Germain Church; there’s also a lovely communal living room that gives a sense of home upon entry. While you won’t find a full gym or spa here, you are steps from Rue de Buci and Boulevard Saint-Germain and an easy walk to the Seine. While technically a “four-star” hotel, my experience at Hôtel Aubépine was worthy of a five-star ranking. It is the perfect place to live out a Parisian pied-à-terre fantasy.

This polished Left Bank boutique hotel makes a great base in Saint-Germain for travelers who value warmth, comfort and thoughtful details over big-hotel spectacle. There are just 28 rooms and suites—each individually decorated in a contemporary but cozy aesthetic—with homey shared spaces like library and fireplace lounges for drinks, reading and relaxing. The property offers more amenities than many of the other small Paris hotels, with a fitness room and sauna, an attentive staff and a steady stream of small extras like complimentary snacks, drinks and breakfast. It’s a strong choice for repeat Paris visitors who want a refined, residential stay in an unbeatable neighborhood.

Another Paris property that is frequently booked by Indagare members, this hotel is actually three merged townhouses that were completely renovated in the spring of 2022. “Pavillon Faubourg Saint-Germain has a great Left Bank location, and it’s charming and intimate, with service that’s very friendly and attentive,” says Indagare’s Kathryn Nathanson. “The design has a fun, colorful vibe that mixes classic charm with modern style.” What makes the property especially appealing for its price point is the breadth of amenities: room service, a serene spa with an indoor pool and hammam and a proper gym. The hotel’s 47 rooms and suites tend to be more spacious than those found at many Left Bank peers, with terraces in select categories and rare connecting setups that can comfortably accommodate families. This historic post office just behind the Bourse de Commerce was converted into a hotel that offers a discreet residential experience in the heart of the 1st arrondissement. Most rooms feature balconies overlooking an interior courtyard. “My recent stay at Madame Rêve was a dream,” says editor Claire Gelalich. “The location was perfect; I felt like more of a local staying here than at the other, more flashy, touristy hotels. But the crown jewel of the property is truly the rooftop!” La Plume serves Japanese-French fusion with stunning views of St. Eustache and 360-degree vistas over Paris. Built in 1900 for the World’s Fair, the building radiates Belle Époque grandeur (think: wrought-iron details, marble floors and a chandeliered lobby with soaring windows). Rooms are comfortable and refined—and the rooms with Eiffel Tower views can feel like a real score. This property is best for travelers seeking a central base with old-world Paris charm.

Fun, edgy and young, The Hoxton, Paris delivers big-buzz boutique energy at genuinely approachable rates. “The public spaces are beautiful, with two courtyards, including two beautifully restored 300-year-old spiral staircases and lots of greenery,” says editor Peter Schlesinger. “They’re designed for working, lingering and people-watching—the social heart of the property.” Set inside an 18th-century building once tied to an advisor to Louis XV, it pairs a grand Rococo façade with contemporary, industrial-chic interiors. With 172 rooms, it’s one of the larger hotels on this list; layouts skew small (there’s a “Shoebox” room category) but are functional. There’s no room service, but guests can enjoy a complimentary grab-and-go breakfast bag. The speakeasy-style Jacques’ Bar rounds out the lively, like-minded scene that makes The Hoxton a hit.

This charming boutique property is a hidden treasure in the heart of Le Marais, tucked just off the storybook-worthy Place des Vosges. It’s perfect for travelers who want the shops, galleries and cafés of the neighborhood, without the noise. The hotel’s leafy courtyard is a secret weapon—a sunny sanctuary for morning coffee or an evening glass of Champagne. Inside, the mood is clubby, intimate and comfortable, with library-like lounges for breakfast and lingering. The 56 rooms and suites differ in décor, with styles ranging from toile and exposed wooden beams to more modern designs with French gothic edge (we recommend booking the latter). Another charming boutique property in Le Marais, Maison Saintonge occupies a sliver of a five-story maison and is dressed up as a confisserie, or sweets shop. What the property may lack in space, it makes up for with details—the 22 rooms feature exposed ceiling beams, stone floors and lovely fabrics, unlike many other Parisian boutique properties that drown interiors in velvet and chintz. Centrally located, with access to the best Marais shopping, restaurants and bars, as well as cultural treasures like the Maison Picasso, Centre Pompidou and Places des Vosges, Maison Saintonge is a good choice for price-sensitive, younger couples and solo travelers. It’s also a great home base for the international work-remote set, as all the rooms come with plenty of outlets.

Opened in June 2023, this jewel box of a boutique hotel in Le Marais—at the intersection of Rue de la Verrerie and Rue des Archives—was designed by Martin Brudnizki to foreground layered patterns and rich textures for a playful, lived-in feel. “The 61 rooms have a whimsical feel, with lots of character and intimacy,” says trip designer Charlotte Clayson. “The Junior Suite category and up are the most comfortable for more space. A major bonus and unique selling point to this property is the hammam, pool and substantial gym. After a long international flight or busy day walking around Paris, these spaces offer a wonderful way to wind down and relax.” The buzzy Boubalé restaurant and cocktail bar by Assaf Granit draws locals as well as guests with a sophisticated, unique menu, and is well-liked by Indagare members. Le Grand Mazarin is a fun, joyful property that feels special and complete without over-the-top pricing—and it’s no surprise that it has become one of the Paris hotels most booked by Indagare members.

This glamorous hideaway is just off the Champs-Élysées and is intimate, discreet and impeccably polished after its June 2024 renovation, with high-touch, friendly service. Set in a turn-of-the-century building on the former site of Honoré de Balzac’s home, the property has a palette of neutrals layered with wood, velvet and natural stone and subtle Art Deco gestures that nod to the 1930s and ‘40s. The atmosphere feels a bit younger than one might expect for this neighborhood, and the property is popular with stylish couples and first-time Paris splurgers who want five-star polish without Palace Hotel formality. “We just had new parents looking for a quick Paris getaway without their newborn and toddler. We chose the Balzac for them, and they loved it!” says trip designer Grace Park. “The rooms are smaller, so they went for a slightly larger Junior Suite, and it was perfect.” Indagare staffers love the dimly-lit bar—a chic Parisian speakeasy with genuinely excellent cocktails—and the Japanese-inspired Ikoi Spa for a reset after a day of touring. Another plus: Pierre Gagnaire is conveniently just next door.

“La Fantaisie delivers real value through design and location,” says Indagare’s Michael Barattini. “The neighborhood is lively and local, with easy access to major city sites, and the impeccable Martin Brudnizki design—inspired by the historic Cadet gardens—makes the hotel feel far more considered and transportive than its price point might suggest.” In signature Brudnizki style, the décor is playful and charming; hues of green, pink and yellow—with floral wallpapers—nod to the hotel’s gardens. The 63 rooms and 10 suites are comfortable and bright, with a homey feel and either city or garden views. Breakfast is served in the lovely back garden and on the rooftop bar. The small spa is a standout, with four plunge pool options (salt, hot, cold and Jacuzzi) and a hammam. La Fantaisie is a home-run hotel for many types of travelers—especially for repeat Paris visitors who want to live like a true Parisian.
