The well-named Local, hidden in Castello near the Arsenale, should go at the top of any foodie’s list for dining in Venice. All the ingredients on the often-changing menu are sourced from suppliers nearby, including farms, fruit orchards, and incredible seafood from local fishermen. Dishes are heavily inspired by traditional Venetian fare but have been beautifully updated with contemporary touches by the talented and innovative chef Matteo Tagliapietra, who originally hails from Burano (he returned to Venice after working in such acclaimed kitchens as Copenhagen’s Noma and Venice’s Locanda Locatelli). The airy dining room is contemporary and stylish, with a gorgeous terrazzo floor inset with Murano beads. The open kitchen dominates an entire side, so you can watch the action. Local is one of those places where it’s best to opt for one of the many tasting menus, allowing the chefs to build a dining experience for you while you sip a local vintage. Dishes are beautifully presented, full of unique touches and, best of all, they taste of Venice, past, present and future.
