At FYN (pronounced “fain”), South American produce appears in contemporary Japanese dishes and served with French vigor. The menu offerings here are an ever-changing work of art, whose assembly is on display due to the restaurant’s open-kitchen format, part of FYN’s determination to foster comfort and informality. (The pastry selection lives amidst the dining tables.) But informal does not mean unrefined—the fifth floor of this former silk factory combines gray and silver wood, stone and metals to create a sleek, modern space, with a caramel-colored statement piece hanging from the soaring ceilings and tall windows offering views of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. The three minds behind this unique experience are South African chef and restauranteur Peter Tempelhoff (a Michelin-starred restaurant veteran), French general manager Jennifer Hugé and head chef Ashley Moss. A triple-threat in more ways than one, it’s little surprise FYN was awarded the Best Restaurant in Africa in the 2022 World’s 50 Best awards.
