The Design Haven: The Silo

The most recent addition to Cape Town’s hotel scene, the Silo opened its doors in early 2017 to great fanfare. The property is a member of the Royal Portfolio Collection (known for several much-lauded properties in South Africa), and is a masterpiece of industrial-meets-Art Deco design.

  • Vibe: Stylish, eclectic, lavish
  • Location: On the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a trendy downtown hub. The Silo sits atop the recently opened Zeitz-MOCAA contemporary art museum.
  • Best For: Couples and groups who value impeccable décor and an ideal location
  • Room to Book: Each of the 28 rooms is individually designed and offers excellent views. Families should consider either a two-bedroom Royal Suite or duplex-style Family Suite.
  • Keep in Mind: The rooftop bar and fine-dining restaurant are open to non-guests and should not be missed; be sure to stop by for a drink to savor the unparalleled views of Cape Town and Table Mountain.

The Grande Dame: Belmond Mount Nelson

This Belmond property boasts an oh-so-British setting complete with beautiful grounds, a full spa and kid’s club.

  • Vibe: Classic, elegant, pampering
  • Location: A five-minute walk from the vibrant neighborhood of Kloof and Bree Streets, home to plenty of bars, restaurants and shops
  • Best For: Those who appreciate an old-world ambiance and resort experience
  • Room to Book: One of the recently renovated suites in the main building, which are fresh and airy
  • Keep in Mind: The Garden Cottages are a good choice for couples looking for privacy, and they share access to an adults-only pool.

The Urban Oasis: Ellerman House

Located in Camps Bay, this contemporary-cool property is set cliff-side and offers stunning views from all but one of the eleven rooms.

  • Vibe: Private, cozy, adult
  • Location: Overlooking Bantry Bay, a 20-minute drive from downtown Cape Town
  • Best For: Couples and families with children older than 14 years old (due to the hotel’s policy). Children of all ages are welcome in the two villas.
  • Room to Book: One of the Ellerman Suites or Deluxe Rooms, which have private terraces and excellent ocean views
  • Keep in Mind: The Main House has traditional, British-colonial décor and a fantastic collection of South African Art. The two villas, while more spacious, lack the same sense of place.

The Family Affair: One & Only Cape Town

The expansive One & Only is a veritable city resort, complete with a man-made lake, several restaurants, a large spa, kid’s club and some of the largest suites in Cape Town.

  • Vibe: Family-friendly, corporate, reliable
  • Location: V&A Waterfront
  • Best For: Families looking for a full-service resort with ample amenities
  • Room to Book: Island rooms, which surround the hotel’s lake and provide easy access to the pool and spa
  • Keep in Mind: The One & Only’s decidedly corporate vibe doesn’t quite gel with laid-back Cape Town; what it lacks in charm, however, it makes up for in amenities.

The Quirky Character: Cape Grace

Cape Grace

's design is a whimsical take on a sunken ocean liner–turned–luxury hotel. The 121 rooms are decorated with quirky antiques and unique art, and the property has an attractive spa, buzzy bar and outdoor pool.

  • Vibe: Nautical, charming, low-key
  • Location: V&A Waterfront
  • Best For: Families or couples who appreciate lots of character and a great location
  • Room to Book: The Rooftop Terrace Suites, which have private terraces and fabulous views
  • Keep in Mind: The two restaurants are suburb. Don’t miss the harborside bar for a cocktail, and the fine dining restaurant for delicious, Cape Malay–inspired cuisine.
