Ikalto Monastery was founded in the 6th century by Saint Zenon, one of the prominent Syrian Fathers. It gained importance in Georgian Christianity in the 12th century when David the Builder chose to move his base from west Georgia at the Gelati Monastery to Ikalto, where he established an academy.
