Day Trip: Telavi

The administrative and cultural center of Kakheti—Georgia’s premier wine growing region—Telavi is home to 20,000 residents. The town dates back to the 1st century AD when it was an important stop on a trade route between the Middle East and Europe. See the sites to visit in Telavi below.

Erekle II and Cholokashvili streets

The unique architecture and heritage homes on Erekle II street are a highlight. Here, travelers will see carved Kakhetian balconies and some historic facades with traditional turquoise-trimmed white galleries topped by red roofs. Across the river, one of the town’s oldest streets, Cholokashvili Street, is also worth seeing.

Farmer’s Market in Telavi To get a taste of local life, head to the farmer’s market, where you’ll find vendors selling everything from cheese and local spices to meat and vegetables. There isn’t much souvenir shopping to be done here. This is an active and lively market where locals come to purchase goods for their homes.

The Palace of King Erekle II The Palace of King Erekle II is the only well-preserved palace in Georgia, dating back to the 17th century. It was the royal residence through 18th century. The palace was converted to a museum in 1927, and visitors can now see the king’s living area, bedrooms and throne room.
