Eye of the Needle has a store in Palm Beach, but the candy-hued store also fits right into Nantucket, where it is located next to hot-spot restaurant the Pearl. The color-coordinated racks are packed with frilly, preppy fashions that appeal to young adults as much as sophisticated adults.

Nantucket Bookworks

This family-friendly independent bookstore has a well-edited selection, including numerous titles about Nantucket. Take advantage of the island setting to reread Moby-Dick (the whaling boat Pequod departs from Nantucket Harbor in Melville’s masterpiece). My favorite tome, set on the island, is Ahab’s Wife, Sena Jeter Naslund’s innovative reworking of the classic from the perspective of Una Ahab. There is also a delightful selection of stationery and cards.
