It has a very nice outdoor setting, great wine cellar and pretty good food. They also drive you back to your hotel in one of their many old vintage automobiles.”

Mandalay Restaurant

The fine dining restaurant at the Governor’s Residence has a supremely romantic garden setting and a menu that features a good mix of Western and Asian dishes, including an extensive selection of typical Burmese dishes, like Lephet Thoke (pickled green tea leaf salad); Mohinga (curried fish soup with noodles) and Kyet Thar Hsi Pyan (a curry of chicken and corn).

Phyu Phyu Tin, the owner of this charming restaurant around the corner from The Strand, was one of the first restaurateurs to introduce the notion that Burmese food (normally eaten on the street) and an elevated dining experience can coexist. It’s a great spot for trying a host of local dishes, as well as Thai and Laotian cuisine. The airy dining room with comfy wicker chairs and a soaring ceiling is a welcome respite from the hot, crowded streets of downtown Yangon. After your meal, don’t miss the Pomelo boutique next doors; it’s a wonderful fair trade shop that carries lovely accessories and gifts.

Sit in the garden-courtyard, lit up by lanterns strung in the trees, of this restaurant that’s hailed as the best for Burmese cuisine (the menu also features a large Thai selection). Start with some of the many delicious small-plate dishes, including grilled eggplant, pickled tea leaves and winged bean salads before ordering curries (don’t miss the butter fish and tofu versions). Burmese cuisine is not overly spicy; instead, diners are given tiny dishes with chilies and dipping sauces to adjust to their liking. Padonmar is in walking distance to the Governor’s Residence.

A stylishly designed spot in downtown Yangon, Rangoon Tea House serves elevated versions of traditional Burmese food, biryanis and curries as well as tea and all the snacks that go with it (tea-leaf salad, spring rolls, bao, samosas and more).  One of Yangon’s best restaurants, this hipster spot is just as popular among locals as with travelers.

Shwe Sa Bwe (Golden Table)

The concept of this wonderful restaurant resembles that of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen: the cooks in the kitchen are underprivileged young people who are being trained as chefs and who are selected based on their motivation and their willingness to stay and work in Myanmar. “We want to prepare them for dynamic careers in the hospitality industry in their native country by providing them with an appropriate curriculum based on international standards,” say the owners of this unique dining venue. The restaurant where guests can sample the young chef’s menus is open for dinner only. It’s located north of Inya Lake near the American Club.

Sofaer & Co.

Located within one of Yangon’s 187 historic (and now protected) buildings from the colonial era, this restaurant is buzzing with locals and travelers alike. The original tile floors, wicker-backed chairs and rich, dark teak transport diners back to the early 1900s, while the bright mural of a young female figure and a bookcase lined with Monocle and Kinfolk magazines are a nod to today’s trends. Owned by a foreigner, the menu is authentically Asian, and the wait staff is incredibly attentive.

The Village House

Aptly named, the Village House is a simple, locally owned restaurant in a small village off the beaten path. While the food is delicious, the direct views of two stupas, which are beautifully lit at night, are worth the short drive alone. The menu offers traditional Burmese food, in addition to some Chinese options. The beef potato curry is a favorite.
