Bibaji Churi Wale
Mr. Sattar Biba’s family has been selling glass wedding bangles in Jodhpur for more than 100 years. His small shop near the Clock Tower is piled high with bangle boxes of colors, decoration and sizes. Be sure to try bracelets on before buying as they come in various sizes, some of which are very small. If you call, the store will send someone to guide you to the shop. They make great, inexpensive souvenirs.
Boutique at Mehrangarh Fort
This sophisticated museum shop features a large selection of regional products, including high-quality cashmere embroidered scarves and an entire room devoted to miniature paintings. Prices are fixed but reasonable.
Clock Tower Market
The main market place where fruit sellers meet sari vendors sprawls around the historic Clock Tower. Intrepid photographers and shoppers will love the color and chaos. Those uncomfortable with crowds and hawkers may find it less appealing.
Ignore the shabby store front and crudely painted sign above the door. This is the place to order up your custom jodhpurs. It is a tiny shop in town but they have whipped up riding breeches for a who’s who of international equestrians and dandies.
More of a series of storerooms than a proper shop, this dusty warren of collectibles is not for the feint of heart. Flea market prowlers, however, could get lost here for hours. Whether you are looking for wooden tables, lacquerware, brassware, old keys or lanterns, you will find literally hundreds of options. One room is devoted entirely to drawer pulls. A layer of dust covers most everything but prices are reasonable (negotiate), and there truly is something for everyone here if you look long enough. The owners, the Singhal family, claim to export more than 600 containers of goods abroad a year.
Maharani Art Exporters
A four-story emporium of textiles, this shop in Jodhpur is piled with fabrics and purportedly supplies shops from ABC Carpets and Roberta Freymann to Etro, Loro Piana and Hermès. Mukesh Jain, whose family has run this shop for decades, will show you pictures of Richard Gere and Valentino in the store, but whether you believe that you are buying cashmere and pashmina made for luxury labels or not, you are likely to find some items too tempting to resist. It is worth negotiating as prices fluctuate wildly. They will ship internationally but with inconsistent speed. Some packages arrive within a week and others may take many weeks.
Mohan Lai Verhomai is also known as Mr. Spice of Jodhpur. In his shop not far from the Clock Tower, he sells all kinds of spices from curries and chilies to saffron and masala. He also has herbal remedies, including special herbal tonics and powders for hair treatments.
Raas Hotel Boutique
The nicest small boutique in Jodhpur is located in the lovely Raas Hotel. Its selection has been curated by Cathy Nieddu, who has lived and worked with artisans in the region for years. She creates textiles and furniture for decorators and has a wonderful eye. In this jewel box of a shop, you will find a nice selection of jewelry, fashion, accessories and housewares.
For the many decorators, designers and importers who visit Jodhpur for treasures, Cathy Nieddu’s atelier is a must-visit. She and her husband have sourced and manufactured furniture and linens for years with local artisans. She also creates fashion and has curated the lovely shop at the Raas Hotel. Serious shoppers should make a point to visit the appointment-only showroom. Contact Naresh Chauhan at the phone number listed.
