4 Days: Essential Stockholm
Navigating Stockholm on foot or by boat is best done with a guide, who can point out insider spots and local haunts. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.
Day 1
Embark on a guided tour of Gamla Stan to see the Royal Palace and Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities. End the morning at City Hall and the Armory, which houses gilded costumes, crown jewels, antique weapons and more. In the afternoon, visit SoFo, a bohemian neighborhood that boasts vintage stores, boutiques, convivial restaurants and coffee shops. End the day at Fotografiska, Stockholm’s cutting-edge photography museum. Tour the galleries before dinner at the museum’s lauded restaurant.
Day 2
In the morning, explore Djurgården island and the Vasa Museum, home to a 17th-century warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. Then continue on to Skansen, the oldest open-air museum in the world. Take a walking tour of historic manor houses that were sourced from all over Sweden. Head to the upscale residential neighborhood Östermalm for lunch and shopping. Don’t miss some of the city’s best design stores, including Malmstenbutiken, Svenskt Tenn and other Indagare favorites.
Day 3-4
Explore the glorious Stockholm archipelago on a private boat to the Fjäderholmarna islands. Enjoy the local culture, galleries and visit craftspeople. Continue on to a striking modern art museum located on its own island. Return to Stockholm for dinner.
On your last morning, take the steamer from City Hall to Drottningholm Palace. Tour the palace and gardens, then have lunch at the café on the grounds. Enjoy a performance at the opera house. Return to Stockholm for dinner at one of the city’s best waterfront eateries.
