Zika-Free Beach Destinations: The Top 10 Safe Islands & Resort Locations

In 2016, a massive outbreak of the Zika virus seemed set to redefine where travelers went for tropical escapes.

Thankfully, that immediate threat has lessened, and there isn't a current outbreak anywhere around the world.  Accordingly, some of our favorite Caribbean destinations (including the BahamasSt. Barth's, the Cayman Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Grenada), as well as Brazil—which was the epicenter of the 2016 virus—have been declared Zika-free by the CDC.

Still, the CDC advises pregnant women and women who may become pregnant to talk to their healthcare providers about potential risks, since transmission is still possible (though unlikely) and the virus has been linked to serious birth defects. As a result, some travelers seeking a beach escape are still turning to alternate destinations. From the honeymoon-worthy islands dotting the coast of Africa to Europe’s most stylish coastal resorts, this list highlights some of the best places to travel right now. The following Zika-free beach destinations are some of our favorite warm-weather escapes.

A  great alternative to Mexico in warmer months, Ibiza offers a number of cultural pursuits in contrast to its famous nightlife; the ruins of Sa Caleta are a must for history buffs, the old town of Dalt Vila is perfect for an afternoon stroll and day trips to the neighboring islands allow for some peace and quiet. But no trip to Ibiza would be complete without abundant beach time—the island’s rocky coastline offers everything from romantic hidden coves to white expanses. Read Indagare's Ibiza Destination Report.

Note: There have been a few reported Zika cases in Cairns but the CDC has not yet released a travel notice, because the number of cases has not risen to an outbreak and they are not locally transmitted.

Stretching 1,240 miles along the eastern coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is a stunning natural wonder and scattered with several beach chic hotels. It is a particularly great destination to visit now, as the fragile ecosystem is rapidly depleting and may not exist in the same exuberance for much longer. Read Indagare's Australia Destination Report.
