Our Favorite New York City Hotels Under $1,000 Per Night

Between the nonstop entertainment, ever-growing roster of glamorous hotels and soaring markups on the (undeniably fabulous) food and drink offerings, visiting New York City can be notoriously pricey—especially in summer and around the holidays. But with some careful planning and a little insider know-how, it's still possible to find style and luxury without crossing the $1,000-a-night threshold.

Here are nine Indagare-approved hotels with availability this fall and winter, all offering rooms for under $1,000 a night. Don't sleep on these rates.

There are so many reasons to love a stay at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge: guest-room views of the bridge and Manhattan skyline, an open-air rooftop pool deck reserved for hotel guests, cocktails and light bites at Harriet's, easy access to the ferry and Brooklyn Bridge Park—and the hotel's commitment to sustainable design. Count your lucky stars that you don't have to be a member to spend the night at the private members' club Casa Cipriani. The 47 Art Deco rooms and suites, designed by Thierry Despont, are bookable by the public and occupy the upper floors of the Battery Maritime Building, a distinct Beaux-Arts landmark with many vantage points looking out toward the Statue of Liberty. Days here can be spent at the sumptuous spa, fitness center or rooftop pool before dinner at one of the club's restaurants, followed by music at the Jazz Café or a nightcap in The Living Room lounge, whose terrace overlooks the East River. In short—you get the club experience without the membership.

The younger sibling to The Ned London isn't quite as sprawling—or as buttoned-up—but it delivers the same appealing mix of hotel and members' club perks, with easy access to top city sights and plenty of places to mingle and linger over food and drinks. At Cecconi's, house-made pastas and wood-fired pizzas attract a local crowd, while Little Ned offers cozy booths and a more intimate setting for cocktails and conversation. Guest rooms retain the former NoMad Hotel's residential aesthetic, with wood-paneled walls and vintage-inspired details, alongside signature Ned touches like toiletries from the British spa brand Cowshed. The location is hard to beat, too: the Empire State Building, Madison Square Park and other Midtown landmarks are just steps away.

This Lower East Side gem puts a sophisticated spin on its gritty downtown surroundings, pairing exposed brick walls and factory-size windows with brass accents and moody interiors. Rooms are cozy rather than cavernous, with wooden four-poster beds and velvet armchairs that invite you to settle in. Downstairs, the living-room-style lobby, with its low leather couches and limestone fireplace, is a natural spot for an aperitif before dinner at Dirty French, where locals jostle to secure reservations on weekends. Still hungry? Katz's Delicatessen is located right across the street.

Williamsburg has no shortage of stylish places to stay, from The William Vale to the Wythe Hotel, but The Hoxton remains a favorite. A true Gilded Age landmark, New York City's first five-star hotel has been welcoming guests since the 1970s and still delivers a luxurious, old-world Manhattan experience. The two-story lobby makes an immediate impression with its grand staircase and collection of restaurants and bars, including the Gold Room, where visitors drink and dine beneath vaulted ceilings (that infamously appeared in the pilot of Gossip Girl). This jewel-box boutique property near Union Square Park is another members' club and hotel hybrid, offering a taste of exclusivity without the same sky-high price tag. Despite its British roots, the design at The Twenty Two takes plenty of cues from Gilded Age New York: old-school room keys hang behind a concierge desk framed by velvet drapes, while the 76 guest rooms feature nostalgic details like mohair throws and rotary phones. Dramatic archways and jewel tones continue through the public spaces, including the picturesque Café Zaffri, where Mediterranean dishes are served during lunch and dinner beneath a sloping glass ceiling. Room rates also include access to the small 24-hour gym, though the members' club spaces (which include a second restaurant, a nightclub and lounge areas) are reserved only for those willing to pay the additional annual fee.

We keep coming back to Arlo SoHo for its winning combination of approachable rates, smart design and cool—not to mention genuinely useful—social spaces. The micro-hotel makes the most of its footprint with a tranquil courtyard and a buzzy rooftop bar overlooking the Hudson. Rooms are sleek but compact—with space-saving touches like flip-down desks—and rates often dip into the lower triple digits. The best rooms come with private city-view terraces. Most important, perhaps, is the location: SoHo, TriBeCa and the Hudson river (with its West Side Highway) are all within easy walking distance, making this a particularly good-value base for exploring downtown.

Ian Schrager fans who don't want to shell out $1,000-plus for a stay at The New York EDITION on Madison Avenue will find a more approachable alternative at his Times Square outpost. The location is either its biggest perk or biggest drawback, depending on your tolerance for crowds: this is the heart of Manhattan, surrounded by flashing billboards and the sleepless churn of the Theater District. Step inside, however, and the frenzy disappears. Minimalist white interiors, vertical greenery and floor-to-ceiling windows create a surprisingly serene oasis above the action. Dining is another welcome departure from the tourist traps outside. The Terrace and Outdoor Gardens offer brasserie staples, while Paradise Club hosts immersive theater and cabaret-style dinner performances.
