Easy Fall Weekend Getaways in the Northeast & Mid-Atlantic

This region is unmatched for vibrant autumnal vistas and cozy charms. From Vermont’s maple-lined trails to the Hudson Valley’s farm-to-table institutions (and spooky historical haunts), convenient escapes by car or train abound here, with plenty to satisfy leaf-peepers, art lovers and foodies in equal measure.

Belden House & Mews

A 20-minute drive north from the Mayflower Inn & Spa and sister property to Troutbeck, Belden House & Mews is a three-acre estate with a restored 19th-century mansion and 1959 modernist annex, plus the historic Litchfield Firehouse. In its latest incarnation, the Belden House contains 31 guest rooms and suites, as well as a seasonal restaurant, a wellness center with a spa by Wildsmith and a Japanese Ofuro tub, an outdoor 50-foot pool and a lawn club.

Troutbeck

Stretched along the borders of Connecticut and Massachusetts, the scenic Hudson Valley has been home to humanists and artists for centuries, including Troutbeck’s one-time owner, the poet-naturalist Myron Benton. A peer of Emerson and Thoreau, Benton was born and raised in Amenia and lived on this estate in the late 19th century. Today, his former manor house-turned-hotel offers a countryside escape that is easily reached from New York by a two-hour train or car ride for travelers looking to trade the urban bustle for some rural relaxation.

The 37 guest rooms and suites are spread between the Manor House (built in 1919), Benton House (formerly the Century House, with 13 newly renovated guest rooms and suites by Champalimaud Design, each with private outdoor space), Benton Cottage and Garden House. All feature modern and simple décor, including Frette linens, Wildsmith products and heated floors in the bathrooms. Everything about the interiors match the calming exteriors—cozy fireplaces surrounded by plush couches and armchairs, books lining the walls next to art pieces that held special motifs to the hotel’s history and a sun room where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch. The hotel’s restaurant draws visitors and locals alike for its farm-to-table fare, which is directly sourced from small farms in the neighboring valley. On Monday nights the chef holds a Pasta Night, serving delicious creations with a wine-pairing.

The 250-acre property lends itself to simple relaxation and outdoor activities that cater to both families and couples. There are two tennis courts, a small outdoor pool (open in the summertime) and four trout pools accessible only to guests. Near the tennis courts are “The Barns,” which offer a range of wellness services and amenities—treatment rooms, changing rooms and saunas, as well as a gym and a 1,250-square-foot space basking in natural light for yoga and Pilates studio classes. The surrounding area has multiple biking and hiking trails, and the property can arrange guided fishing excursions, river rafting trips, horseback riding and skiing in the winter. Troutbeck also offers access to the nearby towns of Millbrook and Salisbury, but other notable sites—including the open-air museum and sculpture park at Storm King Art Center—are located more than an hour away, so a car is recommended for further exploration.

Happily perched on Main Street in the village of Rosendale—which is just south of Kingston, and less than two hours driving from the city—this historic countryside inn has just 11 unique rooms and a tavern restaurant helmed by chef Molly Levine, who counts Chez Panisse, Carissa’s in East Hampton and Troutbeck on her resume.

The Weston

The Weston is a stylish property nestled in the Green Mountains of Vermont, offering nine beautifully designed rooms, its own regenerative farm and brasserie-inspired restaurant, an artisanal bakery (coming soon) and a small spa and gym. This countryside gem is a passion project from the Sharp family—the hospitality royalty behind such properties as the Carlyle, Gramercy Park Hotel and Beverly Wilshire. Proximity to ski resorts like Stratton, Killington and Okemo, and colleges like Middlebury and Dartmouth, make The Weston a hideaway to add to your arsenal in any season.

Twin Farms

Since its debut in 1993, Twin Farms has appeared in the very top rankings of U.S. boutique hotels—Indagare’s most-booked list included. Perhaps it’s because the 300-acre estate is a New England retreat fantasy come to life. Once a getaway for writer Sinclair Lewis and his wife, journalist Dorothy Thompson, in the 1930s, the 1795 farmhouse was later reimagined by Thurston and Sharon Twigg-Smith with the help of designer Jed Johnson and architect Alan Wanzenberg. Today, the main lodge and stand-alone cottages have Moroccan, alpine, art studio or other themes that epitomize the Twin Farms aesthetic, character and charm.

Courtyard at White Elephant Hotel, Nantucket, New England

White Elephant Nantucket

The White Elephant, welcoming visitors to Nantucket for more than a century, has several accommodation options to choose from. The original Harborside hotel has 54 rooms, most with views of the bobbing boats docked in the harbor. Most will say a renovation was needed and timed with the 100th anniversary celebration in 2023, White Elephant unveiled a multi-million dollar restoration and renovation of all rooms and cottages for a light and bright feel, with contemporary, Nantucket-inspired artwork. Rooms come with king-size beds and ultra-soft linens and bathrobes. The larger suites have French doors and plush furnishings, many featuring gas-lit fireplaces and private porches with lovely views.

There are also one-, two- and three-bedroom cottages, some with kitchenettes, that work well for families and friends traveling together. Each of the 11 cottages take inspiration from local flora like Honeysuckle and Snapdragon.

At the spa, treatments include a detoxifying salt polish and an organic algae wrap, and there is a small but sufficient exercise facility. The onsite restaurant, Brant Point Grill, is a popular spot for dinner or drinks.

Lounge furniture from Arhaus is scattered around the well-manicured property, encouraging guests to make time to read or nap on a bright blue lounger overlooking the harbor. There are a few complimentary modes of transportation: a shuttle service for within a mile of the property; branded bikes with baskets for cycling into town; or—if available—guests can sign out one of the sleek BMWs to take a longer drive for an hour or two.

Families love the pool (for adults only from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.) which is located at the Inn, two minutes walk from the main harborside hotel. On busy days, consider reserving a cabana. At the inn, there is another fitness center and 20 room options. There are also two downtown lofts plus one-, two- and three-bedroom residences for larger family gatherings.

Considering the hotel’s proximity to town, guests are unlikely to spend a lot of time indoors, but after a busy day spent exploring the lively island and beaches, returning to the calm of the White Elephant feels heavenly.

Suite Bedroom at Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi, Santa Fe, American West

Rosewood Inn Of the Anasazi

Located a stone’s throw from the Palace of the Governors, the fifty-eight-room Anasazi is within walking distance of pretty much every museum, restaurant and boutique the city has to offer. This enviable location, however, also means that the three-story pueblo-style hotel occupies a long sliver of real estate tightly framed by neighboring buildings, so views are nonexistent. The rooms themselves, however, are designed with such style and care for detail that guests don’t seem to mind.

The Inn opened in 1990, but when Rosewood took over the management in 2005 and then again in 2014, the company invested serious money to update and renovate interiors. The inspiration is the Southwest, as can be seen in the Navajo-pattern carpets and throws, comfy chaises covered in cowhide, wrought-iron furniture and intricately carved wooden doors. Every guest room has a kiva fireplace (gas, however, not wood-burning) and a spacious bathroom. There are a few lovely, serene common areas, including a library stocked with Southwest-related titles and two cozy drawing rooms, where guests can have tea and escape the bustle outside. A nice touch is the well-edited original art on display, all created by contemporary Santa Fe artists.

The Inn of the Anasazi is run by Rosewood, and consistently receives the best marks for service in Santa Fe; it does feel a touch more formal, and professional, than such properties as the Inn of the Five Graces and the Inn on the Alameda. The Anasazi Restaurant and Bar is known as being among Santa Fe’s best.

modern beige building in an arid landscape

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe

Set on a ridgeline and comprising over 57 acres, Santa Fe’s most sumptuous resort is all about space, despite being a boutique property: there are sweeping desert views, especially from the large pool deck; the massive rooms employ minimalist-chic decor; and the property fronts a 1.8-million acre national forest, so hiking trails are literally in your backyard. It also completed a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2024, upping the draw of this property fifteen minutes north of downtown Santa Fe.

Each of the sixty-five guest rooms (called casitas), all housed in two-story buildings scattered on a hillside, were meticulously redesigned by Langlois Design, a boutique firm focused on sustainability. While the resort’s Southwestern roots are preserved, each casita, including the nine one-bedroom suites, has a modern aesthetic and is outfitted with unique, hand-selected accessories and artwork. Casitas on the lower floors have an outdoor patio with a fireplace, which can be lit by staff almost any night during the year. The rooms and suites on the upper floors have more expansive views and sizable terraces, as well as wood-burning fireplaces. Unlike many properties in town, the décor here shies away from the somewhat expected Santa Fe style, embracing a more understated sensibility. Loving details including soft throws and blankets, the wood-burning kiva-style fireplaces and original art, which adds color to each casita and imbues a sense of warmth. As you’d expect at a Four Seasons property, the high-tech features are seamlessly integrated: heated bathrooms floors, flat-screen televisions and docking stations. And nearly everything in the minibar (included in the room rate except for alcoholic beverages) is locally sourced, which imparts a nice sense of place.

Executive Chef Gregory Joseph joined Rancho Encantado in early 2025 to oversee all culinary operations at the resort. With over 25 years of experience, he refreshed the seasonal menus at Terra, the signature restaurant, using locally sourced produce and meats and regionally inspired flavors. Guests can also dine poolside as well as the Bar, which pays homage to the resort’s founder and legendary cowgirl, Betty Egan, who purchased the ranch and transformed it into a hotel in 1968. Guests can also opt to dine in the privacy of their casita without compromising on quality.

The luxury of space is also striking around the common spaces, which include an elevated pool area, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a movement studio for yoga and a massive outdoor fire pit off the Lounge Terrace, where a nightly ritual involves s’mores making and stargazing. The Spa at Rancho Encantado, which uses products from Elemis and Unzented, is an appealing destination even for locals and guests from other properties. For a place like Santa Fe, which has long been renowned as a center for the healing arts and alternative medicine, the small number of high-end spas is surprising. With its well-conceived layout, including steam rooms, soaking pools, infrared saunas and a gorgeous circular relaxation room, the Spa at Rancho Encantado is the kind of place where you want to spend serious time (and the therapists and treatments are top-notch).

The exceptional Adventure Center at the resort can organize a plethora of activities as well. As an all season resort, there is skiing and hiking in the winter months, and during the rest of the year, guests can try everything from golf at the nearby Las Campanos Club (which was also renovated in 2024), guided hikes and bike tours (along with gourmet picnic lunches), hot air balloon rides and even a beekeeping experience with the property’s own beehives. For its guests, the Rancho Encantado has a fleet of Mercedes that can be used free of charge for the half-day or day, facilitating day trips to nearby sites including Bandelier Park, Ghost Ranch and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Abiquiu Studio.
