Travelers might walk right by this 2023 addition to the Bruges' hotel scene without even noticing it—that’s how discreet The Notary is, a fitting quality for a hotel that is extremely intimate, impeccably designed and has a tangible insiders-only feel.

Review

Opened in April 2023, The Notary feels like a secret—you have to be in the know to know it. Rather than a grand entrance, there is a single door with a subtle sign acknowledging its existence (the sign even reads “hush hush,” encouraging guests to keep this gem a secret for as long as is possible). Similar to Ett Hem in Stockholm or The Lowell in Manhattan, the hotel immediately gives the impression that you are a guest in the home of an ultra-chic local.

Upon entering, travelers are welcomed into an intimate foyer with a grand staircase, while reception is tucked away and set up like a home-office. There are only eight rooms, and each is named for a famous philosopher. No two rooms are the same, following the original structure of the house such that all vary in size and style—though each has its own fireplace, many of which are located in the spacious bathrooms. All rooms are exquisitely designed, tasteful yet exciting.

The Notary is a B&B style property. There is somebody on property 24 hours a day, but it is not a full-service hotel, and reception is not open during the evening hours. There is no restaurant, but there is a beautiful dining area on the ground floor looking out onto the well-manicured lawn. Breakfast is served here daily, and guests can enjoy snacks or drinks in this space or in the other sitting areas on the first floor. The aforementioned lawn is home to a small garden and a unique swimming pond open to guests. The pool was built to resemble a coy pond, and there are a few fish dwelling within, which is why the team has chosen to refer to the amenity as a swimming pond rather than a swimming pool. There is also a heated, outdoor jacuzzi.

Note: Two more rooms will be added in Spring 2024 (bringing the total room-count to ten) as well as a small fitness facility.
