Old Guard San Franciscans flock to the 336-room Ritz-Carlton on Nob Hill to celebrate weddings and lavish charity dinners. The lobby always seems to be a swirl of social activity, cocktail dresses and conviviality. No wonder novelist Danielle Steel chooses the Ritz for her biennial Star Ball, which draws heavyweights like Sidney Poitier and Elton John. The hotel opened in the 1990s, but its old-school sumptuousness gives it the feel of balls and Christmas teas from a century ago. This nine-story grande dame—its uniformed staff beaming a cordial welcome—exudes elegance, with gleaming marble floors and gilt-edged porcelain arrayed in rosewood cabinets. It’s clear that the Ritz-Carlton means to please both business types and families taking a weekend break. Staff greet guests by name, find information readily and take control when packages must be expedited. VIP guests are given secure access to the Club Level, which occupies the top two floors and offers an open bar, all-day buffets and handcrafted chocolates.

The Lounge, where afternoon tea is served Friday through Sunday, is decorated with bold art deco touches. That’s in keeping with the hotel’s traditional and over-the-top décor. The hotel’s Parallel 37 restaurant, however, breaks entirely with this look: it boasts a warm, earthy palette and contemporary décor in rich wood, leather and stone.

The rooms and suites at the Ritz are up-to-date, contemporary and done in a sophisticated palette of blues and grays with comfortable furniture for lounging. The rooms are elegant and refined, with plenty of closet space, and the bathrooms have broad marble counters. The Ritz Carlton ensures that the families are well cared for, as well as the nannies traveling with them. Nannies receive a “Survival Kit” with a map, a list of local family events, sunblock and cookies. Those who wish to maintain their fitness regimen while traveling can make use of the excellent gym, which has state-of-the-art equipment.
