Review

Set amongst the majestic Spanish Peaks, the Montage Big Sky is a perfect resort-like setting for those wanting to explore Montana’s Big Sky country. The one hour scenic drive along the Gallatin River valley from Bozeman airport showcases the beauty of the aptly named Treasure State.

The resort, which opened its doors in 2021, sits at the end of Big Sky Ski Resort, allowing for a ski-in/ski-out experience in one of America’s premier ski destinations. An onsite Compass Sports shop makes buying or renting all necessary gear easy, allowing guests to be on the mountain within minutes. With a wide variety of outdoor activities, Montage Big Sky is for skiers, non-skiers and multi-generation adventures. In winter, there are opportunities for snow tubing, ice-skating, dog sledding and  snowshoeing. During the summer season, the area turns into an adventure-sports haven with world class fly-fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking and more. For golfers in the group, a Tom Weiskopf-designed course is nearby. The proximity of Montage Big Sky to Yellowstone National Park, just 45 minutes to the West Entrance, allows guests access to some of the major park sites like Midway Geyser Basin and Old Faithful from the closest entry point.

The hotel design echoes an upscale mountain lodge with 100 guest rooms and 39 residences. Rooms and suites are finished in light colors with contrasting dark woods, and feature amenities that make even the coldest winter day enjoyable, including fireplaces in every room and heated bathroom floors to complement the leathered marble counters and deep soaking tub. Many of the rooms face west over the mountains, allowing for breathtaking views of the peaks turning orange in the sunset glow. The 39 residences, which go up to six bedrooms, are a great option for larger groups or families who want a full kitchen, living room and washer/dryer at their disposal (plus, some residences offer a private hot tub).

The amount of dining and recreational offerings at Montage Big Sky make not leaving the hotel a totally viable option. For all-day dining, Cortina features Northern Italian cuisine with a Montana twist. In the morning, Wildflower Market is the perfect spot for on-the-go pastries and coffee (ideal for getting on the slopes faster!); in the evenings, the chic brasserie Alpenglow has live music performances. Outside, near the year-round heated pool, guests can enjoy elevated après-ski drinks and bites at Backcast. Classic American fare is served at Beartooth Pub & Rec alongside table games of all kinds, an arcade room and four-lane bowling alley. Golfers looking to practice their swing can try one of the three golf simulators at Rivalry, another restaurant/gaming hybrid, with a Mexican menu. After a day of enjoying the outdoors (or indoors), Spa Montage features 12 treatment rooms, an indoor adults-only pool, a hair salon and fully-equipped fitness studio with Peloton bikes.

Truly a game-changer in the Montana skiing scene, the Montage Big Sky is a resort worthy of putting Big Sky on the luxury-loving adventurer’s map.
