What I'm Buying this Week: September 14, 2023

With Fashion Week and fall fresh starts upon us, I’m investing in items that support my goals for the new season—beginning with some additions to my traveling library (all of which are available in paperback, for easy packing):

  • License to Travel: A Cultural History of the Passport by Patrick Bixby examines the history, politics and personal journeys of these oh-so-precious documents, starting in Ancient Egypt and leading up to the borders of modern day.
  • Either/Or by Pulitzer Prize finalist Elif Batuman is the sequel to her bestselling 2017 novel The Idiot, following the coming-of-age adventures of Turkish-American Harvard student Selin, in Hungary and beyond. I have yet to start either, but they promise a similar read to Sally Rooney’s Normal People, with a greater global reach.
  • Closer to home, Trust by Hernan Diaz is a maze of power, ambition and deceit in 1920-30s New York City, which is slated to become an HBO series starring Kate Winslet (it also won the Pulitzer Prize earlier this year).
After summer soirées, I’m revisiting my wellness intentions, starting with these healthier substitutes for alcohol and caffeine, which work for simply cutting back, as well as a full detox. They’re also helpful for preparing your system for an overnight flight or challenging time zone shift:
  • In dealcoholized wines, some of the best I’ve tried so far are those produced by Leitz, a family-owned estate in the Rheingau region of Germany. (I recommend adding a large ice cube to cut some of the sweetness—and my favorite for these still-warm September days is the Eins Zwei Zero Riesling.)
  • Matcha- and mushroom-based brews can deliver the same energy boost as coffee in the morning, with less of the caffeine (and jitters, stomachaches and crashes later on). Three brands I’m currently testing out are MUD\WTR, Clevr and ReNude (which is the perfect place to start, since they offer coffee “boosters” as well as full-on replacements).
I’m also refreshing my closet of travel staples—most importantly, the wear-everywhere dress and the uniform overcoat. Both of these essentials can be layered upon for shifting climates, transition from day to night and accommodate most destinations’ dress codes; plus, when you opt for prints and bright colors, you have an eye-popping outfit with fairly low effort. The Australian brand Alémais is one of my personal favorites for dresses and matching sets (I'm loving the Elisabetta floral linen shirt dress), while other Indagare go-tos include ME+EM

, Figue, Sea and J.J. Martin's La DoubleJ (who also has a beautiful homewares line). For outerwear, I have my eye on the Kelly green Florence wrap coat from A.P.C.; DVF’s Eunice coat in bright blue; this double-breasted wool coat by Stella McCartney; this fuchsia longline blazer from Avec Les Filles (Barbie for fall!); and this belted fringe coat from Simkhai
