The Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort is a Spanish colonial–style megaresort a few miles south of Laguna Beach, which draws families, big groups and weddings.

Featuring grand, Tuscan-inspired architecture, the 400-room property makes up for a somewhat tired décor with an abundance of on-property activities. The 18-hole championship Monarch Beach Golf Course, three swimming pools and excellent spa make the 172-acre resort a good choice for families and groups traveling together. The property is not located directly on the beach, but the resort runs a shuttle to a private beach across from the golf course, where guests can take surfing lessons. Additional kid-friendly activities include story time and s’mores making.

While accommodations leave a little to be desired—the brown and cream color scheme could use a modern touch-up—the Monarch Beach Resort offers the largest guest rooms in Orange County, so no matter the category, guests will have a comfortable, spacious place to stay. The higher floors offer the best views of the Pacific Ocean.
