Ayres Bespoke Tailor
Ayres Gonçalo cut his teeth on Savile Row as well as with tailors in New York and Hong Kong before returning to his home country to open a bespoke operation in downtown Porto. His small atelier encourages shoppers to peruse selections of fine fabrics from England and Italy that can be used to create suits and shirts. Clients come from all over Europe and some from South America. By appointment only.
Benamôr 1925
This pleasingly aesthetic brand with its retro packaging and gorgeous colors (the jacaranda line gets top marks for sense of place, as Lisbon in May is all about the jacaranda trees) offers affordable skincare with years of know-how. Started in 1925, it was a favorite of the last queen of Portugal, after whom the Rose Amélie line is named. Shops are a relatively recent chapter in its existence but a real pleasure to visit, especially this large one at Campo das Cebolas.
Cantê
The motto behind this popular bathing suit brand is “Somewhere It’s Always Summer,” and the swimsuits here certainly echo that saying with joyful motifs, vibrant colors and creative cuts for women and children. All of the products are made in the Lisbon atelier.

Claus Porto
Known internationally as much for its eye-catching Belle Époque packaging as for its delicious fragrances, Claus Porto has been an institution in Portugal since its launch in 1887. Still a reference in the world of perfume, it has commissioned new scents from noses like Lyn Harris (behind the Miller Harris line) and has boosted its men’s range with a contemporary take on its original Musgo Real in the black edition (bergamot, lemon, vetiver) and blue, Atlantic Ocean inspired, Alto Mar. Don’t miss the uplifting, citrusy, Banho range. There are several locations in town, but this one—inside a former pharmacy in Chiado—has a barbershop downstairs where men can also book a wet shave.

Costa Nova
Simple but very stylish stone homeware is the trademark of this eco-friendly, Portuguese brand Costa Nova. Alongside large tableware range, it also sells linens, glassware and even dog bowls.
d'Orey Tiles
El Corte Ingles
This Spanish department store chain’s basement-level gourmet shop is great for stocking up on fine Portuguese wines, cheeses and other perishables. You will be tempted to dig in before they can be packed away as gifts.
Embaixada
A grand, 19th-century Moorish style palace in the glamorous Principe Real section of Lisbon is home to one of the city’s coolest shopping emporiums. The palatial building that has housed an embassy (hence its name) hosts a variety of shops in what used to be rooms, plus a bar/restaurant in the interior courtyard. From baby clothes to bikinis to leather goods, products featured in the myriad stores tend to be made and designed in Portugal.
