Portugal’s iconic egg tart pastry, pastel de nata, was first created by the monks of Jerónimos Monastery—and in 1837, Pastéis de Belem opened only a short walk away. Today, amidst classic blue and white Portuguese tiles and stucco ceilings, the masters at Pastéis de Belem produce what many regard as the best pasteis de nata in the world, using one of the monks’ old recipes.
