Review

If the architecturally striking Juvet Landscape Hotel looks like something straight out of a movie, that’s because it is. The property served as the set for the cult film Ex Machina, a tantalizing thriller that capitalized on the hotel’s remote, rural setting to foster a sense of eerie isolation. But, this property, which is located near the bucolic town of Valldal and on the banks of the Valdolla river, is far from the haunting mansion that it portrays in the film; in reality, Juvet is a serene escape that allows guests to experience Norway’s greatest asset: its stunning countryside.

Perched along a hillside dotted with birch, aspen and pine trees, Juvet’s nine modern cabins feature at least one full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. The style is understated, and the rooms are constructed from materials like concrete and reclaimed wood. Each accommodation boasts a bedroom and living area, as well as a bright yellow bathroom. The clean lines, muted color scheme and views combine to make guests feel as though they are completely submerged in nature.

While Juvet does not have many public spaces (but most guests will spend their days on excursions and not lounging at the hotel), it does boast a lovely spa, which features a hot tub, steam room and relaxation area. Meals are served in a former barn, which, in contrast to the modern rooms, is styled with fur throws, antique rugs and a smattering of curiosities including woven baskets and lanterns. Dinner is a communal affair, during which all hotel guests eat at a long table and enjoy a set three-course meal.

From Juvet, guests have access to lots of activities and attractions. Trollstigen is a short drive away, and the iconic Geirangerfjord is an hour from property by car. Activities on offer include white-water rafting, fishing, kayaking, climbing and canyoning, and Indagare can arrange a number of tours throughout the region, including private boat fjord cruises and helicopter trips; contact us to book an excursion.
