Prati, the residential neighborhood close to the Vatican, has become known as a foodie destination in the last few years in no small part because of Sorpasso. Part of its appeal is that in a city where you can’t help but notice the tourists, this vibrant restaurant is heaving with Romans who use it as their canteen late into the night.
And the food is delicious: a room devoted to meat and cheese, yield up plates of house-cured thinly sliced prosciutto and local unusual cheeses, and dishes like a butter-like baccalà carpaccio, and trapizzini, spongy flatbread stuffed with stewed oxtail, provide a break from the ubiquitous carbonara and cacio e pepe. Other attractions are the fresh juices and delicious cocktails, the extensive wine list focusing on smaller producers, and hours (from 7:30am-1am) that mean you can stop in any time of day, an added plus for those finishing their Vatican tour late.
