Nymphenburg Palace

Once used as a summer residence for the Bavarian royals, this baroque style chateau sits on sprawling grounds with English gardens and a lake. Although it may be an exaggeration to refer to Nymphenburg Palace as the “Versailles of Munich”, as some locals do, the palace does have impressive frescoes and chinoiserie details, and the small former hunting lodge on the grounds, Amalienburg has spectacular rococo interiors and a marvelous hall of mirrors.

Nymphenburg also houses an acclaimed porcelain manufactory where delicate creations are still painstakingly handcrafted, which can be toured with an advance appointment. The manufactory is unique for the fact that it has commissioned contemporary designers with lines, including New York’s Ted Muehling who created a most exquisite, nature-inspired porcelain line. There’s a small boutique at the palace as well as in the center of Munich.
