Sand-Buried Church

Den Tilsandede Kirke, Gamle Landevej, Skagen, Denmark

The solitary Gothic structure rising above the grassy sands is a haunting and beautiful sight for visitors to the Sand-Buried Church. Located just a mile south of Skagen, the 14th Century church is one of the oldest buildings in the area (and was once one of the largest churches in the region during Medieval times). During the late 18th Century, the church started to be buried by the sand from nearby dunes—with the congregation digging out the entrance each time a service was held. In 1795, the unruly sands won, and the church was abandoned. Today, all that can be viewed of the original structure is the gable.

Note: The walk to the Sand-Buried Church is about a mile and a half from the parking lot roundtrip with no benches or areas to rest. It is steep and the ground is uneven in places.
