Grenen

Grenen, Skagen, Denmark

See Website

Located at the tip of Denmark, Grenen is effectively a giant sandbar that extends to where the North Sea and Kattegat Sea meet. Visitors can wade into the chilly water for pictures at “Denmark’s Tip.” Rides from the visitor’s center are on vehicles called “Sandormen” (“Sandworm” in Danish), which comprise a tractor pulling a trolly, to reach the Grenen. It’s best to take the Sandormen to the point and then walk back along the beach to see the WWII military bunkers that are slowly being lost to rising sea levels. Locals bring blankets and have picnics on the beach between the bunkers.

Tip: Pack flip-flops. Sand in socks is inevitable here.
