Masaya Market
Essentially unchanged since 1888, Masaya is based on the historic 16th-century market the enterprising indigenous population set up to sell shoes and hammocks to Spanish colonists. Amidst the tacky travel souvenirs, expert shoppers can find sumptuous leather accessories, intricate woodworking, cigars, and beaded and silver jewelry.
While items made from real tortoise shell are widely available, avoid buying them as the turtles are endangered and poached for their shells. It is also illegal to bring tortoise shell products into many countries and customs officers look out for such souvenirs.
