The only things for sale in Hanga Roa are souvenirs and postcards, all of which can be found at any of the nearly identical stores in town. At the base of Ronu Raraku, however, there is an artisan’s market, selling locally-made jewelry and small reproductions of the moai. While some establishments accept U.S. dollars, the Chilean peso is the official currency of Easter Island.
Creating original carvings based upon prehistoric sculptures, Luis Hey is a true artisan, and highly successful. His is the workshop to visit if looking for an authentic (and pricey) memento.
Located at the corner of Roa Rakei and Tu’u Koihu, this artisan’s market sells hand-made crafts including moai statues and jewelry.
