Known as the “City of Lakes” or “Venice of the East,” Udaipur is located in the Indian state of Rajasthan, 250 miles southwest of Jaipur. Founded in 1559, Udaipur was the historic capital of the former kingdom of Mewar, famous for fending off Mughal invaders for several centuries. Apart from its unique natural beauty – lakes, mountains and deciduous forest – Udaipur retained a great deal of Hindu influence and architecture, which is rare in Northern India.
