The start of summer in the Hamptons brings with it a slew of exciting new restaurants and an influx of travelers looking to spend time at the beach in Montauk, Southampton, East Hampton, Amagansett and other popular coastal towns. Here are the latest and greatest things to do in the Hamptons for summer 2019, including two beautiful new hotels and some foodie-friendly restaurants.
It’s been a long time since the Hamptons welcomed a buzzed-about new property, but this summer, the game-changing Shou Sugi Ban House will bring Japanese zen to Water Mill. The 13-room spa retreat is located next to the Parrish Art Museum and will have a healing center, a spa with hydrotherapy pools, a fitness center, organic gardens and more. Guests can opt for four-, five- or seven-day packages (or à la carte treatments for non-hotel guests), which are inclusive of individual wellness programs (think micro-needling facials, watsu water massage and daily tea ceremonies) and nutritional meals from Noma co-founder chef Mads Refslund.
On the other end of the spectrum, and farther away from NYC in Montauk, is the just-opened Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina. Located five miles from sister hotel Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, the property has 107 rooms, two pools, a private beach and three restaurants, including the seafood-focused Showfish, which will be a hot spot this summer.
Every year, the Hamptons dining scene gets a bit more competitive with new arrivals and summer-only pop-ups. This summer, one of the most talked-about spots is Coche Comedor, an upscale Mexican restaurant from the Nick & Toni’s team in Amagansett. In East Hampton, Bostwick’s on the Harbor will offer a slightly more upscale version of sister restaurant Bostwick’s Chowder House and summer-friendly dishes such as lobster rolls and crab cakes. Just a few doors down, in the space occupied by the mega-popular EMP Summer House for the last two summers, is Paola’s East, an elegant Italian restaurant.
Taking over the space that once housed the iconic Cyril’s, Morty’s Oyster Stand will serve a seafood-heavy menu, as well as a fresh take on the most popular drink at Cyril’s, the Bailey’s banana colada. Fans of NYC’s Ed’s Lobster Bar can now get their fix of the restaurant’s top dishes in Sag Harbor at Ed’s Lobster Bar East. And over in Southampton, the sprawling T Bar has a crowd-pleasing menu (think sushi, burgers and more) and al fresco seating.
