A recent trip reminded me of the unique beauty of Santa Fe, New Mexico. As the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America, it features a mix of high desert and Southern Rockies landscapes; a sophisticated community of artists and philanthropists (it is the third-largest art market in the U.S., with close to 300 galleries and more than 20 museums); and great restaurants and fun boutiques (including the best custom cowboy bootmaker in the country). Santa Fe blends the atmosphere of a funky small town with the refined offerings of a sophisticated getaway—but it is also a gateway to some of the most humbling national parks in the American West.
