The Long Weekend

Long Weekend: Southern Cities

The North may have the southern states beat when it comes to major metropolises, but the same cannot be said for the old-world charm and slow-paced ease that typify many of the cities below the Mason-Dixon line. Sometimes, a little Southern hospitality is all you need to recharge during a weekend getaway. Here are our favorite destinations:

One of America’s earliest cities, Charleston remains among its most elegant. Live oaks line cobblestoned streets, which are still plied by horse-drawn carriages. The city encompasses the best of two cultures: the aged hush of cobblestoned European hamlets and the welcoming hospitality of the American South. Charleston remains a living museum of early American urban planning, architecture, social customs and the decorative arts, while hosting young creatives with innovative endeavors.

Buzzing with up-and-coming artists and country music VIPs, Nashville is a city with a long history. But nowadays, with a culinary scene to rival that of its musical reputation, Nashville is becoming much more than just “Music City”—the blossoming cultural hub is and a low-key destination for those who want good food and good times.

New Orleans

The historic pastel city on the bayou is a place where the tropics meets the American South, where Creole meets Cajun, Haitian meets African, and everyone eats, drinks and dances. New Orleans is teeming with refreshing new energy, and is a destination infused with a French joie de vivre.

In addition to its lengthy history, Savannah is recognized for its wonderful creativity thanks to the flourishing Savannah College of Art and Design. In addition to the youthful energy, the old-fashioned destination offers lovely shopping (especially interior design stores). There is also excellent Low Country cuisine that highlights the bounty of Savannah’s nearby farms and coastal catches. If you can, arrange a visit to a plantation.
