Few cities can compete with Cairo for sheer historical significance. The culture capital is home to the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, millennia-old tombs and temples and the spectacular new Grand Egyptian Museum—with enough touring to fill several days easily. But Cairo is also a sprawling, chaotic metropolis, and knowing where to stay, eat and shop—and how to organize your sightseeing—can make all the difference.
From the essential ancient sites to the restaurants, shops and museums worth building into your itinerary, these are Indagare's Cairo highlights.

The St. Regis Cairo
A newer luxury option along the Nile, the rooms are large, the décor is opulent and nearly every window looks out on the river.
Marriott Mena House, Cairo
The place to stay if you want the Pyramids outside your window. This historic hotel sits at the foot of the Giza Plateau, minutes from the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Khufu's Restaurant
Named the No. 1 restaurant in the Middle East and North Africa by MENA's 50 Best Restaurants in 2026, Khufu's pairs contemporary Egyptian cuisine with an extraordinary, unobstructed view of the Great Pyramid. Almería Restaurant & Bar
Tucked inside Downtown Cairo's historic Cinema Radio complex, Almería serves shareable Mediterranean and Levantine dishes, from mezze and flatbreads to tagines. Its central location makes it an excellent lunch stop while exploring Downtown and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
Em Sherif Cafe Egypt
The beloved Beirut-born restaurant has two Cairo locations, in Sheikh Zayed City and New Cairo, both in affluent suburbs well outside the usual sightseeing circuit. It's a trek for most travelers, but worth it for excellent Lebanese food and a lively, largely local scene.

Mamlouk Gallery
Locals say that this two-room shop is their one-stop shop for souk items without traveling to the chaos of the souk itself.
Mounaya Gallery
This sleek shop facing the Nile carries stylish accessories and fashions from around the region.
Khan el-Khalili
Cairo's centuries-old bazaar is worth a visit for the energy alone. Get lost in its lanes and browse jewelry, brass lanterns, textiles, spices and traditional crafts.

Ancient Egypt & Historic Cairo
The Grand Egyptian Museum
The long-awaited GEM is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. It has more than 100,000 artifacts with its centerpiece being the extraordinary King Tut collection, with 5,000+ objects from the boy king's tomb displayed together for the first time.
Pyramids of Giza
No first trip to Cairo is complete without seeing the Great Pyramid of Khufu, which is the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, along with the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx.
Saqqara & Dahshur
Travel south of Cairo to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid, the first pyramid built by the ancient Egyptians and the world's oldest known monumental stone structure. Continue to nearby Dahshur for Sneferu's Bent and Red Pyramids, which trace the architectural evolution toward the pyramids at Giza.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
The highlight of the NMEC is its haunting Royal Mummies' Hall, where 20 ancient Egyptian kings and queens are displayed.
Coptic Cairo
Spend a few hours visiting one of the city's oldest quarters, home to important Christian and Jewish landmarks including the Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue.
Islamic Cairo
Explore Islamic Cairo, including the monumental 14th-century Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan and the neighboring Al-Rifa'i Mosque, two of the city's most impressive examples of Islamic architecture.
