Built as the summer retreat for the cardinal of Como in the 16th century, this grand estate in Cernobio passed through multiple noble families—including Caroline of Brunswick, who lived here during her tumultuous marriage to King George IV and renamed it Villa d’Este—before becoming a hotel in the 1870s. Today, that royal heritage feels little changed, and it’s beloved by Italians and foreigners alike for its excellent service, divine views and sumptuous interiors. It was the first hotel in Europe to introduce a floating pool, now widely copied elsewhere along the lake. Another highlight: 25 acres of gardens worth exploring, a rarity among the more compact hotels in the region. A half hour north of Villa d’Este, the 84-room Grand Hotel Tremezzo is another of the lake’s veritable icons. Like Villa d’Este, it’s historic and grand, in a 1910 Belle Époque building that gives Wes Anderson vibes. More than a century on, it’s “still the dreamiest,” says Indagare’s Megan Arnoldy. The hotel’s owners—the local De Santis family—livened up the historic interiors with fancifully colored furnishings: lime green, soft purple, cherry red and bright orange seating fills the salons and guest rooms, while preserving the original ornate woodwork. The scene here—at the floating lake pool (easily reached across the street), the lovely garden pool or at any of the several bar areas—is usually a bit younger than at Villa d’Este. From the same owners as Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Passalacqua is an intimate boutique hotel in Moltrasio that became an international sensation when it opened in 2022, transforming a long-underutilized 18th-century villa into one of the world’s most famous hotels. “With only 24 rooms and suites, spread across three buildings and five acres of land, the hotel masterfully strikes the balance between elegant and cozy,” says Indagare’s Madeline Case. Designer J.J. Martin (founder of Milan’s LaDoubleJ) infused many of the public areas with her chic, playful, more-is-more mentality around textiles and patterns. “The stunning bones of the property combined with the De Santis family’s impeccable taste make for a hotel that you’ll be dreaming of long after you check out,” writes Maddie. Unlike Indagare’s other top hotels in the area, Passalacqua is slightly removed from the lake itself, on a hill overlooking the water, with the property’s pier across the street. il Sereno is the antithesis of maximalist Passalacqua, on opposite sides of both the lake and the design spectrum. The 30-room minimalist retreat opened in 2016, making a splash as the first new hotel build on the lake in decades. Creator Luis Contreras sought to integrate the interiors with the surrounding landscapes, emphasizing lake views from nearly every space in the hotel. The result: a glassy, contemporary retreat flooded with natural light. Each of the ultra-modern rooms—done in black walnut and stone—has a terrace overlooking the lake, with interiors from designer Patricia Urquiola (also behind Six Senses Rome), and there’s a top spa, along with a floating pool. As the name suggests, Il Sereno is on the quiet side, with a relaxed, easygoing vibe very different from the scene on view at Passalacqua, Grand Hotel Tremezzo or Villa d’Este. Opened in March 2026, The Lake Como EDITION brings the brand’s effortlessly luxe, airy vibes to the shores of Cadenabbia, inside a restored 1830s palace directly across from Bellagio. Edition loyalists will love the muted color palette, the bergamot scent and the ability to earn Bonvoy points. This estate property on the middle prong of the lake, just south of Il Sereno, is ideal for travelers who want a contemporary, luxurious resort experience, but in a heritage setting. There are 75 accommodations spread across multiple historic buildings (and a few newer ones). Near the water’s edge, the main public spaces and some suites are inside the fabulous, neoclassical Villa Roccabruna (once home to a leading opera singer, Giuditta Pasta, who was composer Vincenzo Bellini’s favorite diva). Also on the lake’s middle prong, Filario is one of the most intimate hotels on Lake Como, with just 13 rooms and suites inside a former waterfront factory, plus eight residences on-property. It’s contemporary in design, with a color palette of grays, blues and browns. The rooms offer streamlined boutique comfort, while the residences—ranging from one to three bedrooms—come equipped with full kitchens, living rooms and washer/dryers, making them ideal for DIY families, groups and longer-term stays. Apart from its lower price point (it can be half the price of other hotels on this list depending on the season), the main appeal at Filario is direct access to one of the lake’s few actual beaches. True to its name, and with Art Nouveau architecture reminiscent of its more famous competitor a few towns south in Tremezzo, Grand Hotel Victoria is a quintessential 19th-century “grand hotel” in Menaggio, on the lake’s west side. The Victoria promises fresh interiors—it reopened in 2021 after two years of major renovations—that showcase original detailing (chandeliers, grand staircases, friezes along salon walls) plus contemporary guest rooms in muted tones. It is home to the biggest wellness area on the lake, the 16,000-square-foot Erre Spa, with two indoor pools, saunas and hydrotherapy plunges, plus a great fitness center. This is a great choice for adults and families seeking five-star amenities at a slightly lower price point than Como’s grand dames, or those pursuing a rejuvenating wellness retreat. An 18-suite hotel on Lake Como’s quieter eastern shore, midway between Il Sereno and Filario, Villa Lario spreads across two acres with direct lake access and a floating dock.
