How to Pack for Summer in the Mediterranean: Melissa Biggs Bradley's Tips

For years I have been an avowed carry-on-only packer (you can get my tips for how you can become one, too, here)—and key to keeping my packing light is curating a well-built travel uniform with some essential, hardworking pieces. Below are some of my favorite items to bring for a summer season of trips to the Mediterranean, from Sicily to Malta and beyond—plus, tips and strategies for curating the perfect wardrobe for a seaside escape, whether it’s a romantic getaway, an action-packed, multi-generation adventure or something in between.

1. Start with a neutral palette.

Build your Mediterranean wardrobe—your core “uniform” of hardworking essentials—upon a foundation of neutrals. Khaki, white, black, cream and raffia tones allow every piece in your suitcase to work together, making it far easier to pack light while still feeling polished and varied throughout a trip. Think: lightweight white blouses, a wear-everywhere black dress, a raffia tote and versatile leather sandals. A neutral palette lets you mix and match effortlessly—and then you can bring in personality through pops of color and print in your accessories.

A few brands we recommend: Leset, Frank & Eileen (we love this terry blazer), Theory, La Ligne, The Row, Jenni Kayne, Gap.

2. Pick lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics.

The best travel clothes are the ones you can pull out of your suitcase and wear immediately. Whether you’re heading to Italy or the Greek Islands, opt for breathable, packable fabrics that can survive flights, ferries and transfers. Soft cottons, lightweight linens, stretch knits and other textured, beach-friendly fabrics—like ribbed, smocked, crocheted or terrycloth pieces—with relaxed tailoring are key.

A few brands we recommend: Emporio Sirenuse, D'Ascoli, Chan Luu, Sue Sartor, Dôen, Missoni, Omika, James Perse, Mille, Poupette St Barth.

3. Dress for day to night.

The Mediterranean lifestyle centers on unstructured, leisurely days—long mornings on the beach that drift from salty waves to spritzes in the cabana, unhurried lunches that flow into dinner, walks that meander from archaeological ruins and village shops to glamorous hotel lobbies. Your outfits should be just as flexible. Scour your closet for those chameleon pieces that can do double-duty when the line between daytime and evening becomes blurred. Think: a beach cover-up that also works for lunch in town; a flowing, printed dress or lightweight matching set that can go from sightseeing to dinner with just a change of shoes; statement pants paired with a simple white T-shirt, which feels equally appropriate for gallery-hopping and aperitivo hour. It’s all about versatility and multifunctionality; avoid single-purpose items as much as possible.

A few brands we recommend: Etro, Ulla Johnson, Pucci, Alemais, Figue, Jonathan Simkhai, Diane von Furstenburg, Trina Turk, La DoubleJ.

4. Have fun in the sun—but stay covered.

When touring ancient ruins in peak summer heat or walking through cities under the intense Mediterranean sun, long sleeves, airy dresses and loose pants are often more comfortable than more revealing clothing. Shade may be hard to come by—so breathable coverage is essential. Oversized cotton shirts, flowing maxidresses and lightweight layers protect against the sun while still feeling elegant and comfortable.

A chic, functional sun hat is also an absolute must. Wide-brimmed straw hats remain classic, but foldable canvas and raffia styles are ideal for easy packing; hats with ties or straps are best for windy boat days. A great hat is both practical and transformative—it instantly makes you feel polished, with a bit of stylish flair.

To protect your hat—especially a structured one—when traveling, follow these tips: wear it on the plane whenever possible; if packing it, fill the crown with scarves or soft clothing to maintain shape; and secure them to a tote or carry-on with a strong travel hat clip (the Indagare team swears by this one from Lindsay Albanese).

A few brands we recommend: Helen Kaminski, Eric Javits, Jacquemus, Veronica Beard, Solbari, Hat Attack, REI Co-op.

5. Embrace the Rule of Three.

The “Rule of Three” works well for most core wardrobe items to keep your packing edited and carry-on-only—but it is especially important for shoes. My formula: one comfortable walking shoe or sneaker for travel days and touring; one flat sandal for daytime exploring; and one wedge or platform sandal for evenings. (If you are bringing hiking or running shoes, wear them on the plane and edit your leisure shoes down to two options.)

Mediterranean towns are built on uneven stone streets, steep staircases and historic pathways, so practicality—and comfort—cannot be ignored. You need shoes you can actually walk in (cobblestones and heels are not a good combination). Fashion-forward sneakers are always a great, on-trend option that works well even in luxury settings.

A few brands we recommend: Vince, Chloé, Hermés, Stuart Weitzman, Vivaia, Rothy's, Flabelus, Cole Haan.

6. Focus on accessories.

Use jewelry, scarves and other small, easy-to-pack accessories to give your core neutral wardrobe energy and personality. Statement earrings and necklaces, colorful sunglasses, printed scarves and woven bags that you can rotate make simple outfits feel distinct across multiple days of travel. Rather than packing several handbags—which take up an inordinate amount of space—choose one versatile tote for daytime and one or two compact evening bags (like a soft or slim clutch) that go with everything.

A few brands we recommend: Chan Luu, Mytheresa, Chanel, Cult Gaia, Alexis Bittar, Veronica Beard, Mejuri, Lele Sadoughi, Mansur Gavriel, Strathberry, Anthropologie, J. Crew, Mark and Graham, Everything But Water, Mignonne Gavigan.

7. Maximize your in-flight attire.

For overnight flights to Europe, select clothing that feels polished but is soft enough to sleep in—and can be integrated into your on-the-ground wardrobe with a quick steam or laundering upon arrival at your hotel. You want to feel pulled together but comfortable enough to actually rest. My uniform: relaxed drawstring pants; a soft, usually white T-shirt; a lightweight blazer or structured cotton jacket (which can be useful throughout the trip for cooler evenings, ferry rides or more formal dinners); comfortable sneakers; and large scarf or wrap for warmth.

A few brands we recommend: Spanx, Varley, Quince Cashmere, Quince Linen, Naadam, Rag & Bone x Miramar, Lululemon, Vuori.

8. Stay organized with packing cubes.

I swear by packing cubes—especially models with compression zippers. I start with one cube for day and one for evening; I also use a small one for underwear, pajamas and lightweight workout clothes. You can also organize your cubes by outfit category or destination segment: beachwear in one cube, daytime touring looks in another, evening pieces in a third. Packing cubes keep everything much more manageable when you’re moving between destinations—and organization is essential for multi-stop Mediterranean trips that often combine time on the coast with trips to smaller islands.

A few brands we recommend: Monos, Antler, July.

9. Leave room for shopping...

Even committed carry-on travelers should plan for discoveries along the way. From ceramics in Puglia and woven baskets in Greece to vintage finds in Ibiza and artisan sandals in Capri, the Mediterranean is a treasure trove for fashion-lovers and shoppers seeking unique, local pieces and beautiful, tangible memories. I always pack a foldable extra bag for the return journey. Choose a model made from a weather-resistant material to keep its contents protected, and bring an extra TSA-approved padlock (or two) for extra security. Many Indagare travelers will fill this extra bag with their laundry and check it on the way home, to free up space in their carry-on to keep their most fragile purchases safe.

A few brands we recommend: Longchamp, Samsonite, Foldie, REI Co-op.

The Takeaway: Pack to be Present

My Mediterranean packing philosophy is about effortless elegance: fewer pieces, better fabrics, versatile styling and thoughtful accessories. Avoid overpacking by curating a wardrobe that feels easy, chic and adaptable enough to move with the rhythms of the Mediterranean. Comfort matters, and so does feeling like yourself when you travel. The best-packed suitcase is one that lets you focus less on what you brought and more on where you are.
