Family-Friendly Summer Activities in the Hamptons

The Hamptons can get notoriously crowded during the summer season, as families flock to the tip of Long Island to enjoy the famed beaches and fantastic shopping and dining options from Westhampton Beach to Montauk. Indagare contributor Helen Gautier shares how to escape the packed pools and beaches with these kid-friendly activities across the island.

Concerts in Agawam Park are the perfect place to pack a blanket and snacks and let your kids dance around. The concert series takes place every Wednesday throughout the summer, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., featuring different bands. During two weekends in the summer, the concert takes place on Coopers Beach.

The Arts Center Southampton (25 Jobs Lane) also hosts lovely, child-friendly concerts on their lawn. Step inside to meet the animals with educators from Quogue Wildlife Rescue. Check the schedule on the Arts Center's website.

Drop in at Rogers Memorial Library (91 Coopers Farm Road) for Story Time or an arts and crafts class. Check the schedule online.

The Green School / Art Farm (Sagaponack) is a magical farm and school where children learn to connect with animals, including baby goats, bunnies and chickens. The school also hosts parties and a summer camp

Madoo Conservancy Gardens (618 Sagg Main Street, Sagaponack) is a must-see, beautiful reserve that looks like a mythical, overgrown garden. It hosts a variety of children's programs, including camps and storytelling events for all ages (tickets must be purchased in advance).

The Children's Museum of the East End (376 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, Bridgehampton) offers a wide array of special events and children’s classes, such as gardening, art and 'baby and me.' Visitors can also stop by to enjoy exhibits, performances and the museum's resident bunnies.

Every Friday and Saturday evening in the summer, the Wölffer Estate Wine Stand (3312 Montauk Highway, Sagaponack) hosts a concert with live music starting at 4 p.m. This longtime favorite among locals is a great place for both adults and children. Bring a blanket and give your kids a chance to dance on the lawn or run among the vines. Parents can enjoy wine and cheese from the Stand. The party goes until sunset.

There is a weekly Drum Circle that meets on Mondays at 6 p.m. on Sagg Main Beach. One of the more fun and casual events in the Hamptons this summer, the beach is filled with children, families and music, as well as spectators, swimmers and surfers. It is also a beautiful spot to watch the sunset.
