Indagare Matchmaker: The Best Balearic Island for Every Type of Traveler

There’s an undeniable essence on the Balearic Islands that only exists here, an essence that draws me and so many others back to this special archipelago, even as its popularity grows. Our team has scouted each of the four inhabited islands—exploring turquoise coves, strolling mountain villages, horseback riding the coast and adapting to that joyful Spanish rhythm of life. The beauty of the Balearics is that each island is distinctly unique and a destination in its own right. If you feel a tug to experience them for yourself, discover our team’s take on which island may be the best fit for you.

Tip: The Balearic Islands attracted over 15 million international travelers last year, so if possible, try going in the shoulder season of April, May, June, September and even October. Hotel costs will be lower, and you’ll be surrounded by more locals and experience fewer crowds.

I was lucky enough to live in Mallorca when I was younger, and I think what has stayed with me most is the rhythm of life in the Balearics. The islands are incredibly beautiful, of course, but what makes them special to me is everything beyond the obvious: the food, the local traditions, the small villages and hidden calas and that slower Mediterranean way of living. I think that the Balearics are places you should return to rather than try to ‘do’ in one trip. You can come back year after year and experience them completely differently. There will always be another cove to swim in, another village to wander, another little tapas bar to discover or another long lunch that becomes the entire afternoon. But you also start to develop your own rituals and places you return to every time, which is part of what makes the islands feel so special. The more time you spend there, the more you realize that slowing down is really the point.

For Design, Adventure and First-Time Balearic Island Travelers: Mallorca

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and definitely the most popular. The glamorous, evolving island has been a tourism hotspot since the 1950s, which is why the hotels here are at the top of their game. From the capital city of Palma—with its vibrant, winding streets, artisan shops and tapas bars—and the storybook villages of Soller and Deià to the picturesque coves of Formentor, the glitzier yet still laid-back island has something for everyone. There’s always more to discover in Mallorca, which is part of its appeal—but if nothing else, embracing the Mallorcan pulse is sure to make you feel more alive.

  • Vibe: Buzzy, active, vibrant

  • Best For: Design lovers, first-time Balearic Island travelers, adventure seekers, honeymooners, older couples, families—there's something for everybody in Mallorca

  • Where to Stay: If shopping and dining at the best restaurants are your priority, stay in or near Palma. It's walkable, buzzy and approximately one hour from the scenic mountain villages. Some Indagare favorite properties are Sant Francesc Hotel Singular and Cap Rocat. For quaint Mallorcan charm, stay near the mountain villages on the northern side of the island. La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel is nestled among the cobblestone streets and rolling hills in Deía, and it is walking distance to restaurants and local boutiques. For a proper respite secluded from the more popular villages, Richard Branson's Son Bunyola Hotel sits on an UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the other side of the island, about an hour and a half from Palma and the mountainous region, lies Formentor. If you’re traveling with family and looking for the best spot to enjoy the beach with a variety of activities, Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor delivers.

  • What to Do: Experience the annual heritage gathering XTANT, visit local artisan shops such as Artesania Tèxtil Bujosa for textiles or Gordiola for hand-blown glass creations, hike the Sa Calobra and enjoy a night out in Palma with a cocktail at La Rosa Vermutería. Wander one of the local markets in Alcúdia, Sineu or Santanyí and make a daily bakery stop for ensaïmadas and doblegats de chocolate. Stroll through vibrant Soller, enjoy a long lunch in charming Deía and bop in and out of the boutiques in Valldemossa. Active travelers will love hiking and cycling through the countryside or taking a dip in one of the many calas (beach coves), especially in Formentor.

  • Indagare Tip: ”Mallorca is the only island large enough that it makes sense to split your trip between multiple hotels. I’d recommend a few nights in Palma (or near Palma at places like Cap Rocat), and then a few nights at La Residencia, a Belmond Hotel, Son Bunyola or the new Four Seasons way up north. The variety makes it feel like two very different stops and experiences.” —Will Nixon, Indagare Travel Specialist

Son Bunyola is the most special and unique place, filled with incredible history—it is one of my favorite properties ever, full-stop. I loved our room—Room 14. It had a huge balcony that we used all the time. The food at the hotel was off-the-charts, maybe the best hotel food I have ever had. In town, we had an incredible meal at CA'N Paco; the mixed Paella was the best on the trip. The spa at Son Bunyola was also incredible, and we loved having a car and a convertible, but you would not want to be on these roads without a very confident driver—they are not for the weak! We loved the Four Seasons Formentera. It was the perfect pairing with Son Bunyola, because it had tons to do. The e-bike ride up to the lighthouse was beautiful. We also enjoyed the cocktail-making class. The hotel has a water taxi into Port de Pollensa, which we took to dinner and back. Room 432 was quiet and perfect with the most insane view. The rooms aren't big, but they are perfectly designed and have a lot of closet space. The staff at both hotels couldn't have been better—responsive, delightful, amazing in every way. It's hard to adequately put into words how amazing this trip was.

Cap Rocat lived up to its reputation, and we really enjoyed our time there. I am so glad we paid for the night before we arrived so we could get in our room right away. It was a total game changer for starting off on the right foot! The food was excellent and they had a pop-up fine-dining restaurant for July and August with a tasting menu, an unexpected bonus. Sant Francesc Hotel Singular was an excellent choice. The location was perfect, the room lovely and the staff were nice and attentive. Belmond La Residencia was also amazing. So beautiful with exceptional service.

For the Quiet, Rural Retreat: Menorca

Mallorca's smaller neighbor, Menorca has quietly grown in tourism with a sprinkling of luxury properties opening in the last decade. Roughly 269 square miles in size (about the same as Chicago), it’s approachable, slow and a bit more raw. (Mallorca is five times Menorca’s size.) As an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, over 40 percent of the island’s natural biodiversity is protected, and the sustainable, low-impact agrotourism movement attracts travelers seeking the unhurried pace. With a variety of restored fincas (farmsteads), staying in Menorca feels restorative and soulful. There are over 100 hidden coves, and the prehistoric talayotic stone monuments continue to invoke wonder. Plus, the island is home to the original Avarca Pons (traditional Menorcan sandals).

  • Vibe: Laid-back, rural, local, slow living—the locals refer to their way of life as poc a poc (step by step)
  • Where to Stay: Son Vell, Torre Vella Fontenille Menorca and Santa Ponsa Fontenille Menorca
  • On Our Radar: Vestige Son Ermitá and Vestige Binifudá
  • Best For: Those seeking something off-the-beaten-path and travelers who love connecting with the land
  • What to Do: Trot on horseback along the famous "Cami de Cavalls," meaning "Path of Horses"—the historic coastal path encircles the island, with origins dating back to the 14th century. Visit Hauser and Wirth Gallery and be sure to make a reservation at the Cantina—the food is phenomenal. Take a jeep tour around the island, bike ride through the many landscapes from ravines to wetlands, hike along the rugged coastline, lay out at a new cove or head to a vineyard tour with a wine tasting.
  • Indagare Tip: “Torre Vella and Santa Posa are sister properties just 10 minutes apart. While they don't have the bells and whistles of a typical luxury hotel, they are both what I would consider "laid-back luxury." Torre Vella has better accommodations and a larger pool, so I suggest staying here with a day trip to Santa Ponsa for their spa. The true highlight is their focus on agrotourism—Torre Villa has one of the few wine productions on the island (2026 is their first vintage!)” — Alex Arduino, Indagare Travel Specialist

Menorca is authentic and off-the-grid in a way that’s hard to find in the Mediterranean. It’s completely relaxing and peaceful. We spent our days on the water, horseback riding and exploring Ciutadella.

For the Nightlife and Wellness Seekers: Ibiza

To only associate Ibiza with wild nightlife is to majorly underestimate the island. While Ibiza is known for its buzzing beach clubs and all-night partying, there’s an equally strong spiritual wellness scene. “Ibiza is a destination for seekers—and while legends of hedonistic nightlife put this island on the map for many, Ibiza has a softer side that is grounded by spirituality and creativity,” writes Indagare editor Trey Ross, who has visited the island five times. “Ibiza is where you go to connect—with others, with music, with yourself. Every visit, I’ve uncovered something new and left with a different feeling; you can visit the island while you’re happy or sad, and no matter what you’re going through, Ibiza can help elevate or mend your emotions. That’s the magic of this place, if you let yourself go and are free to explore and talk to new people, the experiences find you. Everyone is excited to be there, and that energy is palpable.”

  • Vibe: Energetic, magnetic, free-spirited, scenic, timeless... Ibiza has this unique quality that allows it to be multiple vibes at once—a place with serene beaches and rustic chiringuitos for unhurried days, followed by pulsating nightlife where you can lose yourself in a crowd until sunrise
  • Where to Stay: Petunia, located on a quiet corner of the island’s southwest coast, marries modern luxury with rural, bohemian charm. Favorites here include the lush grounds, comfy pool loungers, yoga classes in the garden and rooftop drinks at La Mirada, with one of the best sunset spots on the White Isle. Bonus: the property has direct views of Es Vedrà, the uninhabited limestone rock that ranks as one of the world’s most magnetic spots. It is said to be the remaining peak of the lost city of Atlantis, the birthplace of Tanit, the Phoenician goddess of fertility and war, and home to the sirens that tempted Odysseus in Homer’s tales. Tap into the energy vortex from one of the bougainvillea suites. Six Senses Ibiza, located on the pristine Xarraca Bay, is a haven for those looking for reconnection and relaxation by the sea. We love the farm-to-table Mediterranean-inspired meals, expansive three-story spa and the property’s musical focus, with live musicians playing through the day and night. This is the ultimate stay for luxury seekers on the island who want to be away from the action.
  • Best For: Travelers who want serious fun and don’t mind crowds—throughout the season, the beach clubs and restaurants are busy and the Old Town is bustling. This is an escape that includes being around a lot of people.
  • What to Do: Candlelit dinner at Restaurante Casa Linda in the hills of Ibiza; a long afternoon lunch and beach day at Jondal; charter a boat to explore the hidden coves and nearby Formentera (get lunch at Can Carlitos!); lunch at any of the rustic beachside chiringuitos like Nudo, La Chimosa or Cala Gracioneta; dance the night away at Pacha, DC-10 or the newest superclub, UNVRS; shop in the small village of Santa Gertrudis and get a taste for local life.
  • Indagare Tip: “The dining and shopping are fabulous…don’t miss Taar Willoughby or Annie’s Ibiza. There is also no better dance floor in the world than DC-10!” —Trey Ross, Indagare Editor

For the Peaceful, Bohemian Escape: Formentera

Formentera is the smallest of the islands, with fewer than 12,000 residents, and it’s reachable by ferry from Ibiza. Some make a day trip out of it, while others embrace its relaxing, simple vibe for multiple nights. Indagare’s Nicole Iannelli shares, “Formentera does not make itself easier for tourists; in fact, it makes a proactive effort to prevent overcrowding and overtourism. It doesn’t perform for guests. It’s for someone who wants to experience an authentic, effortless Mediterranean getaway—who doesn’t mind if they aren’t met with perfect English, if their waiter takes a while to get them the check or if they have to search through two different towns to find a computer charger (speaking from experience). It is a place to truly unplug and accept the surroundings as they are, rather than expect them to be molded for vacationing.”

  • Vibe: Barefoot luxury, effortlessly cool, unbothered by approval
  • Where to Stay: Dunas de Formentera for a romantic, secluded slice of paradise on one of the best beaches or Teranaka Formentera, a beloved boutique property for a soulful stay
  • Best For: Travelers seeking a laid-back, bohemian adventure
  • What to Do: Shop in Saint Francesc, check out Majoral, Centrale Perfumeria, Pahiesa and Sabi Simona Colzi, some of the many local artists shops in the town center. Enjoy sunsets on Teranka's rooftop, rent a Mehari (or vespa, if you are adventurous), drive to different beaches for a swim and then all the way to Far de Mola (the clifftop lighthouse at the edge of the island), have paella in a charming beachfront restaurant for lunch, drinks at a chiringuito for sunset and a long outdoor dinner with Spanish bread and wine.
  • Indagare Tip: “Don't over-schedule yourself and leave plenty of room for spontaneity to embrace the slow pace of this special island. I recommend opting for a private boat transfer from Ibiza, as the waters can be unpredictable. What is sometimes a smooth 30-minute crossing can easily become a rough 45-minute to one-hour ride through choppy seas, depending on the weather.” —Sophia Kupervaser-Gould, Indagare Travel Specialist

Teranka Formentera is an ideal entry point to the sapphire-blue, barefoot Balearic life. This boutique property emphasizes wellness and tranquility, tapping into Formentera’s reputation for being a quieter, bohemian escape from the buzz and beats of Ibiza. Teranka sits on a quiet stretch of sandy beach, dotted with chiringuito snack bars and perfect for a dip. Borrow one of the hotel’s e-bikes to explore other quiet coves, fields anchored by the island’s iconic fig tree estalonades and evening “hippie markets” for handmade crafts and art. As the sun sets, a cocktail on the hotel’s rooftop terrace is the perfect way to send off the day before another morning in paradise.
