Sometimes heralded as the Versailles of Portugal, Queluz Palace was the ornate residence of Portugal’s royal family during the 18th century. The design is influenced by Rococo and Neoclassical styles with gilded woods, sparkling chandeliers, vast ballrooms and spectacular artwork. Surrounding the property are acres of elegant gardens, which incorporate a Flemish influence with canals and colorful flowers. Portuguese royalty lived here until 1807, when they fled to Brazil because of the French invasions, and the property was returned to Portuguese state control in 1907.
