Similar to Santa Monica Pier in LA, Navy Pier is touristy but still a hit for families with kids. Once a naval dock, the site of a jail for draft dodgers and a classroom for the University of Illinois, it today is best known for being home to the Centennial ferris wheel, the Chicago Children’s Museum, twice-weekly summer fireworks and the setting off point for public and private boat tours.
