To visit the Museum Nissim Camondo is to experience the harrowing juxtaposition of material beauty and historic tragedy. Set inside the former aristocratic home of the Camondo family, the elaborate rooms display the height of 19th century French finery, complete with crystal chandeliers, gilded gold framed mirrors and paintings, sprawling tapestries and decorative objects like painted porcelain plates, bronze candelabras and ornate silver oil pots. While it may be easy to get lost in the richness of this time period, the house is also shrouded in the tragic story of the family that lived here, whose line was ultimately ended during the Holocaust.
