The Golden Monkey trek is a lesser known activity in Volcanoes, and with two or more days in the area, it is highly recommended for a more mild primate trekking experience. The golden monkeys are an endangered species known for the gold and yellow patches that can be seen all over their bodies. This is a shorter trek than to see the gorillas as the golden monkeys are often found in the agricultural lands (stealing potatoes!), and travelers will have one hour to spend with them.

Logistics: Travelers arrive at Park Headquarters at 7:00 a.m., and begin the trek around 8:30 a.m., and because of the shorter trekking time, most will be back to their lodge by 12:00 p.m..

Know Before You Go: Golden Monkey trekking is only available to those 12+ years-old and it costs $100 per person for a single trek. We recommend acquiring a Golden Monkey permit in advance, but the permits are not as scarce as the permits to visit the gorillas.
