Wilderness Sabyinyo Lodge

With an ideal location just across the street from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Campus, and surrounded by volcanoes, Sabyinyo is a historic, classic and traditional lodge option in Virunga National Park with excellent, high-touch service. The property comprises nine charming stone cottages, one of which is a family cottage with two rooms. All cottages were built using stone and Rwandese terracotta tile on their roofs. All of the free-standing cottages have sitting areas with a fireplace, verandas as well as en-suite bathrooms. Sabyinyo, like Bisate, was built into a mountainside so there are many steps to get around. The best cottage option for those with any disabilities is cottage C4.

The entire property is painted in peachy hues and outfitted in beautiful fabrics with patterns that mirror the local art. The main lodge has a sitting room, bar, dining room, gift shop and four fires around various nooks providing warmth. A wonderful patio overlooks the Virunga Volcanoes and surrounding farmland, providing an excellent spot for breakfast and sundowners. Meals at Sabyinyo are designed with Sabyinyo are designed with sustainability in mind—following the Wilderness ethos—the food is local, healthy and flavorful.

Sabyinyo is a perfect base for all trekking and activities on site including community visits, nature walks and in-room massages.
