Dressmaker Tina Sondergaard moved from her native Denmark to Rome 37 years ago and opened her charming shop in Monti in 2004. “I fell in love with the frescoes,” she says of the whimsical futurist 1930s frescoes that still adorn two walls of the boutique, which has vaulted ceilings and a loft-like workshop where Sondergaard and her seamstress make dresses and alterations.

The designer lived in Paris for one year in the 1980s and taught herself the art of dressmaking by going to flea markets and buying vintage Dior and Chanel jackets and taking them apart to learn how they were made. Today the small shop is filled with feminine jackets, dresses and accessories that can all be custom made. Some of her most popular styles are evening coats in brocade fabrics from Florence and reversible baguette fabric bags. With prices for custom blouses beginning at 75 euros; skirts and dresses at 100 euros and evening coats at 300 euros, it is not surprising that she has clients coming from all over the world to have their clothes made here.
