Up on the ancient ramparts in Antibes next to the Picasso Museum is the intimate Le Figuier de Saint-Esprit, run by Christian Morisset, the mustachioed Michelin-star chef formerly of the Hotel Juana in Juan-les-Pins. Expect a country auberge-meets-modern décor (there’s a fig tree on the dining patio) and a family-run atmosphere; Madame Morisset greets customers and their two sons are in the kitchen. The ever-changing menu, which could include squid-and-mussel cannelloni, lamb served with stuffed zucchini flowers and polenta or lemon mousse with tangerine sorbet, is about as authentic southern French as it gets.
