Review

Solio Lodge is a boutique property run by Safari Collection, which also owns Giraffe Manor, Sasaab and Sala’s Camp. The property has 45,000 private acres within a 110,000-acre ranch, so it feels very private (although other vehicles can access Solio’s conservancy for game viewing during the day).

Solio has just five rooms, including one family unit, all of which have high ceilings, thatched roofs, whitewashed walls and colorful accents. Each unit also has a fireplace, which is helpful during chilly mornings and evenings (at 6,000 feet above sea level, Solio can experience cool temperatures).

The 110,000-acre ranch is regulated to ensure the safety of its population of rhinos, so there are not currently any elephants here, and very few hyena. This also results in a unique, heavily-wooded landscape, with lots of trees that have not been pulled down by elephants. Activities at Solio include shared game drives (a major highlight is the white and black rhino population, the first of which were brought to the area in 1970), walking safaris, birding, mountain biking and visiting a local primary school and orphanage. Solio has its own stables, and offers horseback riding for beginner and advanced riders.

Solio has its own airstrip 15 minutes from the property, but you can also fly to Nanyuki airstrip, which is a one-hour drive away.

Note: The property closes each November for maintenance.

Who Should Stay

Honeymooners and families (Solio accepts children of all ages) looking for a more value-oriented experience in Laikipia.
