At a Glance

It’s not luxurious, but the first Motel 6 in the country has modern décor and ocean views from many rooms.

Yes, it’s a Motel 6, but it’s the very first one, opened in 1962, and it’s located one block from the beach and within walking distance of the shops and sights. No longer only $6 for a room (hence the name), the motel offers no-frills accommodations, but they’re clean and well-kept and come with free TV (originally only coin-operated black-and-white sets) and Wi-Fi for $2.99 a day.

Who Should Stay

For those interested in a true California road trip, staying at the first Motel 6 on U.S. 101 is more than a bargain; it’s a pilgrimage. Those traveling with pets or on a budget will appreciate the Motel 6 as well.
