L’Horizon Resort & SpaReview
One of the most famous examples of California Modernism, the L’Horizon is an authentic architectural landmark and luxury resort with uniquely individual rooms, a worthy spa and grounds that offer adult guests an opportunity to relax within its legendary confines.
Built in the 1950s by William F. Cody, the original hotel hosted everybody from Marilyn Monroe to Richard Nixon. In 2012, it was purchased by Steve Hermann, a designer who has created spaces for Vera Wang and Larry Ellison, and underwent a two-year, $5 million renovation. During the remodel, the property’s 25 rooms were given a unique character (no two rooms are exactly the same) that matched dramatic mountain curtain visible throughout the property. Bungalows have giant, sweeping windows, individual plunge pools and a mix of collectible vintage furniture and modern flair. The Residence, built in the 1950s as a private home for the producer of The Lone Ranger, can operate as a one-or two-bedroom home with a sunken living room and wood-burning fireplace.
SO.PA, L’Horizon’s in-house restaurant is overseen by executive Chef Michael Hung (who also serves as executive chef for Hermann’s other properties the Colony Palms and the Hermann Bungalows. The focus here: New American fare and its global influences. The al fresco dining area features fire pits, fountains, and a 26-foot-long walnut communal dining table.
L’Horizon does not necessarily have the best rooms, spa or pool of Palm Springs hotels, but, altogether, it does offer one of the best overall experiences in the area.
Who Should Stay
The hotel has an adult-only policy and does not allow anyone under 18. It is best suited for couples and groups of friends.
