Discover Uzbekistan

Discover this up-and-coming destination with textile designer and Asia aficionado John Robshaw, who will open doors to private homes and artisan workshops for an immersive look at Uzbekistan’s crafts and history.

What to Expect

Once the intersection for Asian, Persian and Mediterranean civilizations along the Silk Road, and later a republic of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan has stepped back onto the world’s stage thanks to its wealth of cultural offerings— from glittering mosaics, vibrant silks and handcrafted ceramics to sacred Islamic sites and royal monuments.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Explore the riches of Uzbekistan—a safe, cosmopolitan and welcoming country that remains virtually untouched by tourists— through the unique perspective and connections of your host, textile designer John Robshaw.
  • Journey to the crossroads of the world: the ancient heart of the Silk Road, where the warmth of the Mediterranean meets the beauty of Islamic, Russian and East Asian cultures.
  • Access incredible shopping experiences, with behind-the-scenes meetings with artisans and designers in their studios and visits to crafts centers, for such local treasures as paintings, ceramics, mosaics and textiles, including brightly-colored ikats, silks and embroidery.
  • Enjoy expert-guided historical and religious touring in Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand, where you will learn about the many rulers and civilizations that have shaped Uzbekistan into what it is today (including Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the Muslim and Mongolian empires and the Soviet Union).
  • Explore Uzbekistan’s great mosques, tiled mausoleums and imposing fortresses on architecture tours, as well as other monuments ranging in style from the medieval to the Baroque and the Brutalist.

This Journey's Host

After earning a fine arts degree at Pratt and studying traditional block printing in China, John Robshaw journeyed to India to find natural indigo dye for his paintings. Instead, he fell in love with the fabric-making traditions of the local artisans. The hands-on immediacy and vitality of textiles piqued what was to become a lifelong fascination. John’s forays in Asia have taken him to the villages of Gujarat and Rajasthan, and here, his signature style emerged: luxury home goods crafted with the sophistication of modern design and the unexpected elegance of the handmade. Every season, John Robshaw Textiles presents prints expressed in diverse formats such as candles, eyeglasses, fabrics, wallpaper, furniture and loungewear. Robshaw continues to travel widely, learning and adapting regional approaches to color and design and employing local craftspeople from India, Thailand, and the Philippines to perpetuate his handmade aesthetic. He has also collaborated with Uniqlo, Lucky Jeans, S’well, Sea Star, Tocca and Duralee. In John’s words: ”By working abroad, I become a minor character in the lives of the people I work with, and get inspired by what I see and do there. I go to their weddings and celebrate their festivals. I develop relationships with the people who are teaching me. When you look at my textiles, it’s as if you’ve been on the world tour alongside me.” John looks forward to traveling with you in search of inspiration in Uzbekistan, a country he has visited many times.
