Destination: India: Off the Beaten Path

In a dozen trips to India since 1973, I have never ceased to be fascinated, moved, appalled, elated, dumbstruck—with both awe and frustration—and completely absorbed. I have traveled there as a journalist, but for the past ten years my heart has been much closer to the ground through my role as president of the Danny Kaye & Sylvia Fine Kaye Foundation. I have had the satisfaction and the privilege of spearheading a project that has changed the lives of more than 100,000 people. In full view of the regal Himalayas in Almora, about a nine-hour drive northeast of New Delhi, we literally “grew” two full-bodied organizations: Panchachuli Women Weavers, a weaving enterprise that is the largest employer of women in the state, and the Dena Hospital, the state’s best-equipped private hospital.
My devotion to India feels almost familial, and my curiosity about her wonders remains unquenched. So, on my last trip, I decided to step off the classic routes to expand my private map of discovery in three different parts of India.
