Destination: Fiji

Overview Text Size A A A

The purity of the nature and the warmth of the people are what strike you when you arrive and what stay with you when you leave. The air smells clean and fragrant with flowers. Bird songs fill the mornings. The colors seem super charged—in the flowers (vivid purple orchids and hot pink bougainvillea) and in the sea (neon blue starfish and fire orange clown fish). It’s easy to see how the lush green tropical jungle that covers much of the islands and the thousand shades of blue in the sea could entrance a painter like Gaugin. (He painted his best works in Tahiti and never returned to the dreary landscapes of Europe once he discovered the unreal palettes of the South Pacific.) The fantasy quality of each day’s backdrop may be why the Fijian people seem so happy. You rarely pass a person who isn’t grinning and the sound of giggles and laughter is constant. The Fijians’ smiles and effusive ‘Bula’ greetings are contagious. In fact, the song “Don’t Worry Be Happy” could be the national anthem so aptly does it capture the pervasive attitude of the islands.
